Where best to rent your points as an owner

Wasn’t sure if this should go in the renting forum but it isn’t about actually renting explicitly, but more of a discussion, so here we are…

I’ve seen a lot of posts about where to rent if you want to book a reservation but not so much detail and advice about owners who want to rent their points (or I’ve just missed it!) so I’m just curious where you all prefer to rent your points.

I’m likely going to have to rent some of our points the next year or two and just trying to figure out the best strategy. Do you use the forum here or Facebook? Or do you prefer one of the main rentals sites, and if so, which one is best? Is it the same for confirmed reservations? Any pitfalls owners should be aware of?

I have only rented out confirmed reservations. We change our plans frequently so sometimes I get stuck with borrowed points and need to unload them. I have used the sponsor site multiple times and have had good results. The only issue is sometimes because they add $ to it for their fee the price gets too higher for a renter to want to rent the reservation. Especially when Disney has discounts running. I recently had to cancel a trip, so I listed a reservation with the board sponsor and it was gone within 2 hours. Other times, it sits for weeks.

Sometimes we end up short on points so we also rent a few nights once in a while. As a renter, I typically just use the forum here. I have been on the boards for years, so I typically look for someone whose name I recognize and has been active on the boards.

I don’t have Facebook so haven’t had experience with that.

If you are renting more than 100 points, I would probably do it here on the boards, or via Facebook.

Less than that, and it’s not really worth the hassle. You will get a few dollars less per point if you go through a broker, but they will deal with the contract and payments so it is worth the fee.

Thanks for starting this thread. I’ve been in a similar boat, wondering how it works from the rentees side vs the renters. I’ve on these boards where folks offer to rent out just the points or transfer, which I thought was against the rules.

But wondered what was the action if you should pre-book and then rent or just offer up the points. I’ve done pretty well over the years with keeping track of my points and making sure to only bank and use vs having to borrow. But based on coming life events and general plans I do wonder how I’m going to use the points I have and renting is the one option that keeps coming up as the best possible option.

First, decide what you want. Some people like to rent points out themselves - Pros - generally more money. Cons - you may have to kiss a few frogs to get a rental that works. Some people want a broker/middleman - Pros - there is a little security in the way a middle man works, you won't get stiffed, you won't look for a reservation for someone who backs out. Cons - they'll take a cut. A broker is generally less work and less contact with the renter (which is a pro for some and a con for others).

I prefer to rent here on the boards. I’ve done the broker thing and seemed like more of a hassle to me. Past renters who were happy with the transaction will also reach back to me directly when looking to rent again, which has been great. I get to work with someone I’ve worked with in the past and they save a bit on the price per point (I usually knock a $1 or so off per point as a thank you for coming to me).

I highly recommend DVC Rental Store. They post the list of current rental requests (resort, number of points, and dates) and you just click on one to claim it. They immediately email you with the reservation details, at which point you make the reservation and email them back the confirmation number. And they pay the money into your bank account a few days later (you get 75% upfront and the remaining 25% on the check-in date). So easy, no advertising, no negotiating, no having to check availability, no dealing with flaky people.

I've only rented points once, and that was here on the Rental board. I've never rented an existing reservation. I'm on the boards a lot, as a moderator, so i would just keep a watchful eye out, and contact people via PM as soon as I could after they posted or PMed me.

I didn't mind taking the time to book one or two night reservations. And I got all their info, prior to making the reservation so it was made directly in their name, and I didn't have to call MS to change it. I offered 100 points, and the reservation worked out to using 99. over 6 one or two day reservations. I was still in my banking window, so I banked the extra point. As soon as they looked over the reservation, to make sure everything was correct, and verified it via MDE, my terms were 50% payment at that time of verification, and 50% 45 days prior to travel, or 45 days prior to my banking deadline, whichever came first. I sent a paypal request for the remaining balance a couple of days prior to their deadline, and everything went smoothly, and some of them have even contacted me wondering is I would have any points for rent this year ( i don't). All in all a good experience, and I did change one reservation for one of the renters to a different view when it became available, as it was a member staying on their own points with a continuing stay using the rental.

ive only rented here but i will say it has gotten harder to move points. Alot more competition and fewer buyers.
I think fewer people are looking to travel this year, probably due to the economy and geopolitical uncertainty for international travelers.

As Disney is offering more and more discounts it is going to be harder to get people to want to take the risks of getting scammed to rent and to deal with the lack of flexibility and cancellation policies as well as the requirement to pay all or at least half at the time of booking.
