Where are you from question?

I like to mess with their heads...
We say Saskatchewan and then ask them to spell it. ;)

We usually say we are from vancouver, Canada. People always ask if its where the winter olympics was. Then they usually tell us it is really expensive to live there, but pretty. Yep, and yep.lol

We have had the exact same experience. Surprising how many don't know where Montana is as well. ;)

Yes we run into this everywhere!!

YAHOO! some days I can't even spell it!

Normally we just say Alberta Canada, when we get the blank stare we mention Calgary Stampede, most people have heard of that. So then they think were a bunch of cowboys!LOL

Of course it depends where I am, who I am talking with, and the situation. When in the Disneyland area, I usually say BC or BC Canada. If they look confused I may add British Columbia but that throws some people off also.

I never say my hometown as it is a very small place that no one would know.

A few years ago I was waiting for my dh and ds and was browsing the gift shop at the Tower of Terror. One of the CMs started chatting and asked where I was from. I said "a small town in southern Ontario, near Niagara Falls" (my standard answer). He went on to name our town as well as a few others near by and explained that he had lived for quite a while in NY state and had in fact visited our area a number of times. It was a nice surprise!:)

We think of it like a test really. We say Nova Scotia, wait for the pause, and then say it's in eastern Canada. Sometimes we say it's east of Maine, but it's really sad how many Americans don't actually know where Maine is.

But on our most recent trip, we ran into a lot of people from Maine. They have the same complaints about people not knowing their geography btw. :rotfl:

I try to keep it simple and say Canada. Sometimes I say Toronto even though we are from Cambridge. (even my in-laws in Winnipeg always ask how things are in Toronto!)
We spend a lot of time in Michigan and they are totally clueless when we say we are from Canada or Ontario or even Toronto and they live right at the border! I found people at Disney (castmembers) seemed more in touch. They probably see and talk to tourists from all over and therefore are more informed about the world.

Isn't sad most Americans can say where they live and we know the general area they are talking about but they have no clue. I usually tell them Hamilton, Ontario, Canada which is an hour between Toronto and Niagara Falls, which they do know.

They always think we are from Australia, as we are British!!

So they look very shocked when they ask us what part of Australia we are from and we say 'Newfoundland, Canada'! :laundy:

My wife and I say (with pride) Newfoundland, Canada (though we live and work in Manitoba)....A few people knew where that was, granted they were working in the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot, but I'll take it :rotfl:

I always say "Halifax, Nova Scotia" and wait for the look on their face, then I explain it's in Canada. I love how they don't know and then watching them react. The funniest story I remember was talking to a family who thought driving 16 hours was horrible. I said I know we do the drive and takes us 36 hours. :rotfl: There tune changes after that.

Woot woot Cambridge!!!

Last time we drove down, the overnight stop was Charlotte, NC. I went book shopping at Northlake Mall and my accent gave my Canuckness away, and so I got the "where are you from" question. I said "Waterloo, Ontario" and my jaw dropped when the clerk said she'd driven to Kitchener for Oktoberfest three years previous...

Wohoooo Waterloo and octoberfest!

We usually say Ontario, Canada and if they don't look confused then we too say where we live in relation to Toronto. Glad to hear we're not the only ones who handle it like that. That's why we like eating at Le Cellier, we usually end up getting a server from Southern Ontario who knows the geography (and they're equally impressed when we know where Welland or Kitchener is!).

Yay Kitchener!!!

I am from Kitchener too.

We were shopping at one of the premium malls on our last trip and the salesperson told us that our warranty would work even when we were back in the United Kingdom. I asked if it would work in Canada and she replied "of course, are you taking a trip to Canada before you go back to England?" lol I always thought my Newfoundland accent wasn't very strong :)
We usually tell people we are from Newfoundland, Canada usually followed by either the "farthest point east in North America" or "close to where the Titanic sank". Although then some people think we live in the middle of the Atlantic. There's always the few who say "Oh I know a couple of Newfies" :goodvibes

What is more fun is when someone says, "Oh, you are from Canada! Do you know my friend X from Toronto?". So far, I have never known their friends :confused3. I guess a 24 hour drive is a little too much separation.

In Feb a Texas cheerleader was so excited when I told her we were from Ontario... We just had to be friends with Justin Bieber! :rotfl:

On resort buses or at resort pools we have been asked numerous times where are you from. Each time we answer Niagara Falls Canada and each time the person asking was also from Canada. Then we have to tell them that we actually live in Fort Erie and use Niagara Falls cause no one knows where Fort Erie is.

It is fun how Canadians can always pick out other Canadians!

Same thing with us when traveling to the USA. If we mention that we live in Vancouver BC then it's fine, but if we mention where we really live, Richmond BC the glazed looks come into effect. Even when I tell them that we live in the largest Chinatown in North America, they give us the oddest looks, and have no clue what we are talking about.

We usually Canada first and then add Calgary Alberta.

Leaving for DW in 40 days! Just Grandma, Grandad (me), Eric (3 and a half) and Olivia (will turn one just after we get back). And, No, we're not crazy. We have taken Eric on trips before. Gives Mom and Dad some time alone.
