When you're driving and you see a police (cop) car...

I always slow down & if I feel I am going a little too fast, I hit the brakes.:D Don't want a ticket:teeth:

I never hit the brakes because I think that it'll make me look guilty, I just take my foot of the gas and slow a little.

Me too, but sometimes I do a little tap on the brakes. I'm usually not speeding but still have the same reaction.

as a safety precaution. I've heard way too many stories of cops being hit by cars while writing tickets.

They recently passed a law here where you have to move to the other lane if an officer is writing a ticket and if you can't move to another lane, you must slow down quite a bit. Good law! We've lost several officers in the past years to being hit while giving tickets.

I will slow down however if the cop is standing next to the road (i.e. by the drivers window), as a safety precaution. I've heard way too many stories of cops being hit by cars while writing tickets.

Same as MosMom In Indiana it's a state law that if you see an emergency vehicle(not just police) with lights on pulled over you must get over into another lane.

Newsflash... the cop is not going to stop writing that ticket to come after you. He can only do one thing at a time.
Wrong!! Around here it is very common to see other police vehicles backing up the one that has pulled a car over. And to add to the confusion we have some state cops that drive unmarked camaros. A friend was pulled over after passing one, her statement to the cop....."I wondered why in the world a camaro was going so slow." :p In Ohio on the toll road between the IN state line and Toledo we saw one officer in the west bound lanes have someone pulled over and in the median was another officer getting out of his car pointing to 3 other cars going east to pull over. Same type of thing happened when DHs boss took younger DS to Indy for a sporting event.....2 cops pulled over 4 cars at the same time. Most of the time they won't pull you over unless you're going 6 mph over the highway limit.

My boyfriend definitely does. And if there is a cop behind us..just because that is where he is driving we're not allowed to look behind us...he's afraid we may make eye contact with the cop:rolleyes:

Ugh! My pet peeve is people who stomp on the brakes when a police car is anywhere in site. Even worse is those who drive 10 mph in the fast lane to see who's getting a ticket. If I'm in the right lane and the cop has someone pulled over, I will slow down if I can't get over into the left lane.
I tend not to go more than 5-10 over the speed limit, so I really don't worry about getting pulled over. I may take my foot off of the accelerator, but I will not hit the brakes.

My ex-husband was a cop in the little town I used to live in--so I'd usually just wave because I knew every cop in town. Now, I live in a different city so I've adjusted to actually driving the speed limit because I used to be an awful speeder!

In my old town, I was driving down a main road one day and couldn't figure out why everybody was driving 25 mph in the right lane. I went zipping by and saw a cop at the front of the line just tooling along. I caught up with him and he was just laughing to himself because everyone was afraid to drive by him. He waved at me as I went past then everyone else finally got up the nerve to pass him. Must've been a slow day!

Nope. Not wrong. I said the cop writing the ticket isn't going to come after you, I didn't say anything about other cops. As a matter of fact it's common here to see two cops in tandem. People slow down for the first one, then get busted by the second when they speed back up. Saw two Constables doing that just this morning.

The one that makes me  is when you're driving down the interstate, and you come up on a big "clump" of traffic. Turns out there's a cop in the right lane of the clump going 5 miles UNDER the speed limit, and everyone is scared to pass him.

My foot automatically comes off the gas even though I'm going under the speed limit most of the time

I look to see how fast I am going then try to avoid looking at the police car especially if the police car pulls up beside me. I keep driving staring straight ahead. It's like if I ignore him and don't make eye contact, he won't pull me over. Crazy huh?

This reminds me of something funny that I witnessed a few years ago.. There is a certain area where you come around the lake up here and several times a year the State Police will set up a check point there..

Well this one particular year I came around the bend and saw that there were numerous cars that had been waved off to the side - probably for seat belt violations; bald tires; expired inspection stickers; etc..

There was only one officer - checking cars going in both directions.. I was next in line and as he turned towards my car, the car that was stopped coming from the other direction (who he would have checked after me) took off like a "bat out of....." The trooper immediately ran to his patrol car and took off in hot pursuit - lights flashing and siren wailing..

But the best part was watching the folks that were waitng alongside the road to get their tickets.. They hopped out of their cars, were laughing and clapping, givng each other the high-five and then got back in their cars and drove away..:teeth:

If I'm on the interstate and I see this - I try to get in the left lane (if no one else is there).

I always get a guilty feeling whenever I see a police car on the road, even if I'm not doing anything wrong. One of my friend's is a state trooper and he thinks I'm weird....:o

I speed up and race to get the last jelly donut

I am still laughing over this post!!! :hyper:

I think it is natural to look at your speedometer. I just hate it if I do need to slow down a bit, but don't want my break lights to make it SOOOO obvious!!

My DH ALWAYS passes police cars. He'll even go a little over the speed limit. It's almost like he is testing the guy. Oh, and my DH is under the impression that if you are going less than 5 MPH over the speed limit that they can't (or did he say "won't") pull you over. Personally, I don't want to find out.
BTW....he is the one who get's the tickets, not I. I wonder why he thinks he is the expert? ;)

depends on where I am. in the city, I just look out for drivers
changing lanes-people always try to hide-weird! On the
highway, if I'm in my van, I take my foot off the accelerator and
check my speed. If I'm in my bus, the governor won't let me
speed so I'm calmly on my merry way!

Well I have a question for everyone. I recently got (and paid) a ticket for "failing to yield to emergency vehicles" b/c of the following: I was traveling down S.R. 70 (anyone that's been to jensen beach here in Florida knows that road). What happened was there was this huge mud-fest thing where 4x4's and the like were paying to tear up this mud patch that was off this road. Mind you normally there are no cops on this road. This time there were about 15-20 cop cars down the road. This road has virtually NO shoulders down the whole road. As I was going down the road there was this big truck behind me on my bumper so I couldn't see behind me. Well, this cop car comes flying around this truck & me out of nowhere and speeds really fast ahead of us. (BTW this road is only 2 lanes) About 3-4 minutes later, another cop flies around us which I didn't know was there either b/c of that stupid truck.

So I'm going down the road doing the speed limit & a cop on the side of the road yells at me to pull over so I do. In the short, he gives me a failure to yield to emergency vehicles ticket b/c of my failure to pull over on the shoulder (when there WASN'T ONE!!!) or slow down extremely for him (I didn't know he was there b/c of that big truck behind me!). What would you have done? Would you have gone to court to contest it, or just paid the $90 like I did?

If it would raise my insurance rates, I would go to court to protest it. Sounds like you got the short end of that stick, JoNo!

I always check my speed and ease up if I'm over the limit. ;)

It's funny though, I'm a habitual rear view mirror watcher (every few seconds), but sometimes police cars still seem to appear out of nowhere! :wizard:
