When I was growing up, we didn't have "people". As a kid, your people were the other kids in your neighbor hood, and maybe a few kids you saw at church that didn't live very close. Same thing with the kids on your Little League or Pop Warner team. In high school, we still hung out with the kids we grew up with, but added new friends as interests became more defined (sports, band, student government, whatever). Maybe as a junior or senior, musical tastes and pop culture started to influence who you spent time with (in high school, we had rock, new wave, and the tail end of punk). I'm still friends with the guys I went to first grade with and played Little League with 50 years ago.
