When you scraplift....

I'm just wondering.....

When you scraplift, do you copy the layout EXACTLY as shown (same papers, colors, layout, etc) or do you take the original layout and just take ideas from it?

I guess I do both. Sometimes I start out doing exactly the way I see the original layout and then it turns into something totally different. LOL Then other times, I like a layout so much, that I will copy it EXACTLY. I'm always afraid though that if I copy exactly, the original poster of that layout would get offended. I mean, who knows....that particular layout might have already been scraplifted by them. :confused3

But I was looking through all of the great layouts that are posted on here (and other sites) and there are some that I would LOVE to copy exactly the way that I see them. Is it wrong to do this and then finish your album and then post the pics on here for other people to view? I know a lot of people say to "acknowledge" the original person when posting a scraplifted layout, but what happens if you don't remember who it was? Can you just say something like....."scraplifted layout by a poster on the dis?" or something like that?

I don't think I ever scraplift exactly as I doubt I would ever have the same papers and elements - there's very little available other than online over here, and getting stuff from the US involves a LOT of postage:eek: (and sometimes HM CUstoms fees as well:scared1:). I'm more likely to take a general idea and use it on my page, or perhaps a colour scheme or proportions of a simialr paper group - like a stripe, spot and plain used in a similar way to the layout. For example, today I did a snowy page and took an idea from a layout in Creating Keepsakes January 2010, where it used squares of paper and the snowflakes cut out of the square to make a grid with small photos. I was very happy with how it turned out - the actual layout would not have looked right with the sort of photos, but this little "patchwork" decoration worked really well:thumbsup2

ETA I would be very proud to be credited as an inspiration for a layout, but its unlikely to happen I expect :rolleyes. And honestly, if I wasn't credited and happened to see the layout, I very much doubt I would look at it and say "that's MY layout!!" :rotfl:

Problem is, if I end up scraplifting someone's layout in one of my future albums, I don't know if I would know where it came from. So I hope if I say, "I scraplifted this from one of you talented people on here", that that would be enough, ya know? But maybe you're right, maybe by the time I get to scrapbooking that particular layout, it wont be the exact papers and embellishments, but maybe just the idea. Thanks!!!

I do a little bit of both. When I put layouts in my scrap notebook I usually put a quick note by it referencing what initially caught my eye. I do the same things when I save a link online. I am, however, bad about remembering to write down where I got the layout from, so usually my credits are "inspiration from x board" or "taken from x magazine." :upsidedow I haven't shared any layouts here yet, but I can't say that I would be upset if I saw one of my pages CASEd without credit.

More just ideas/general look for me - I would probably change things a little to go with my particular photos anyway, and even if the same exact supplies would work, I would be unlikely to bother shopping for them.

Also, I've never really encountered another scrapper who wasn't flattered to have her layouts "lifted" or who expressed any worry about the credit.

I do not mind any of mine to be scraplifted- as I would feel honored that someone liked it enough. LOL That being said half of mine are scraplifted anyway or classes from my local scrapbook store. :lmao: Now I do usually vary it a little as I usually put more pictures on my page than alot of people or I may have my pics up and down instead of sideways- so I usually have to change it a little.

What I would do if you can't remember where you got the idea from is say that you've scraplifted the idea and then say that if the creator of the page recognizes their work that they can acknowledge it in your post. My feeling is that if I've posted the LO on a board like this it's free game. I also think If I recognized that someone has scraftlifted from ME I'd fall off my chair and be unable to acknowledge my work. :lmao:

I agree with above poster- I think the layouts would be free game once you post them. At least that is why I post mine- maybe somebody will get a good idea from mine and then post their own- and I can do the same.

I generally scraplift sketches, elements, or color schemes. I have never lifted a complete page.

I think it is great when people credit your work, but it certainly is not expected. I have seen people on other boards raise a stink about lifting, but I think that is uncalled for. Once it is posted, it is fair game.

I've done both. I've copied exactly and just elements or the general idea.

Typically the only time I've seen people give credit is digital layouts, but I'm not sure why. Maybe because that person did the designing and creating.

But I agree once it's out there on the web or designed and posted for free it's fair game.

and as long as you are not entering those LO into contests/magazines.... that is where stinks can occur too.

I've certainly never thought of putting a layout up for a magazine or competition - mainly because they want to know exactly what you've used and I don't think "can't remember" or "found it at the bottom of a dusty heap of paper" is quite what they are looking for:rolleyes1:lmao:

Well I'm glad you said that since I LOVE a lot of your layouts (and plan on lifted quite a few) LOL Some I would like to find the same papers, some I plan on adapting it to my own style. One of my favorites of yours is the one with the background of all squares in blues/greens/whites. LOVE IT!!! I'm working on 2 cruises right now and that one would work perfectly!!! Then I have 2 more cruises upcoming. Gotta get to work!!!

Do not mind at all!!! :goodvibesThat one was a good one- pretty easy too, just had to cut the squares out. I got 34 pages and a bunch more done since my crop on Saturday- will be posting those soon as I finish the book. Off work and working on them later today. :goodvibes

:cool1: Can't wait to see the new stuff!!! That's a lot of pages to get done since Saturday. A busy little bee!!!!

I remember you saying that the page that I was talking about (the one with the squares background was a kit from a class you took) Not sure if this is a long shot or not, but do you think the store still has that kit available? I would try to re-create it myself but not sure if I could get the same papers (and this is one that I'd like to completely lift lol)

Oh no- they wouldn't have any left. And it was a few years ago too. They sell out any class kits they have in usually a day. It's a very popular store.
