It is a privilege to assume most people are furloughed. It is a privilege to assume the unemployment insurance system works for everyone. It is a privilege to assume your finances are safe. It is easy to be flip and blasé and assume everything is ok because of unemployment. It is offensive to assume people are better off with unemployment. We had a similar conversation a few days ago, and you said you weren’t looking down on retail workers. Your statements this evening refute that. That is why I felt the need to respond as I did regarding privilege.

I never mentioned reopening businesses. You did.

Pretty much everything you said is not what I said or meant.

A poster said people are getting very desperate and are out of savings and the shutdown cannot go on.

I replied that the majority will be fine because unemployment is available, and for most it will pay more than they previously made so they don't need to be desperate right now. This is a statement of fact, not looking down on anyone or purposely overlooking that some may not be as lucky.

Then that somehow got misconstrued as me saying not one single person in the country will lose a dime over this and I don't care about them and everyone will get their job back and I'm privileged and looking down on retail workers. Where did that come from?

I believe you don't mean to be offensive, but I did not misconstrue the words. The retail workers reference was regarding a very similar exchange we had previously.

Whether you mean it or not, your words say people should be happy they are on unemployment. That is a fact. Assuming that people are better off on unemployment is not a statement of fact. It is an assumption of ignorant privilege as I said earlier this evening. That is all.

The statement of fact is not that people are better off, the statement of fact that I am trying to make is that it is available to people and they will likely make more. You are reading too much into what you think I am trying to say.

If a friend calls me today and says they are desperate because they lost their job and are running out of cash, I would tell them that they should apply for unemployment and that they would likely be eligible and would probably make more than they previously were. I doubt their response would be anything close to, 'why are you looking down on me you heartless jerk!' Which is basically what is happening here.

I really think you are overthinking it all. It’s not going to be that bad in the end.

This virus has at least a 98% survival, possibly more. At this point as long as we keep hospitals prepared things will go back. We aren’t in the same place as back in March when it spread around for 1-2 months going undetected. Every case that gets isolated and spreads for less days is going to add up and make a difference.

THIS. So many people think that if you get this virus, it's an automatic death sentence. When in reality, most recover without ever seeing a hospital.

I have friends that have been trying for 2 weeks to even file for UI. The phone lines are jammed and the website keeps crashing. Do you have any clue how many people are trying to get on unemployment? It's unprecedented. Meanwhile, these people have ZERO DOLLARS coming in. But yeah, just tell people to file - easy peasy.

Right, most states were unprepared for 100's of thousands of claims all at once. The fed didn't get guidance out fast enough either on how to set up a new system for self employed people to apply. Some people have to unfortunately wait and will get back pay for the time missed. Waiting and getting back pay is a better option than doing nothing.

Do people still really think that? A month ago sure, but now that we see evidence to the contrary?
It's hyperbole, people aren't actually saying that. Most understand it's about not spreading it to at risk individuals or overwhelming hospitals.

Not trying to add to any fear mongering, but that’s a very oversimplification of the situation.

For the under-50 y.o. group, likely true.

For the over-50 y.o. group and those with certain conditions, lower.

Let’s not forget the % hospitalized, which was as much as >25% overall. A lot of these people will have had some level of organ damage.

So, it’s not exactly as simple as <=2% of everyone will be just swell.

And all these percentages are based on the interventions that were imposed like the lockdowns nationwide. It will certainly go up as restrictions are lessened. That’s just science.

At my place of employment we had to let all the temps go. They are all now on unemployment. They are all making more now on unemployment than they were doing production for us. That will last for 4 months. Problem is, we will likely want to call them back before the end of July but there will be no incentive for them to come back. Blah to that.

My brother and two nephews are in this exact situation. Making more money on unemployment/bonus $600, then they did working. Financially they are in a better place now. They will probably be going back to work in June and not super excited about it due to finances. Crazy but true!

Agree it is very ironic, but I am glad your family will go back to work. I am afraid there are many who won’t return if called back soon. I don’t foresee it working out well for those who choose to stay on unemployment...

Yeah, but I know someone that is NOT making more so therefore you are looking down on retail workers..or something.

The government didn’t really think this through well. That was an oversight by both parties since neither wants to be seen as the one limiting aid.

You know what’s even crazier?
The small business aid package is even helping small investment firms that make the rich richer by hedging against such market drops. What’s in the news about this is absolutely true as I have a friend who works for one such firm. Not only did they make money, they’re going to be getting free money from the government to cover their salaries and other expenses.

Edit:
I’m getting OT now. But, the aid will also surprisingly NOT be helping some self-employed and sole proprietors because the aid package only looks at net income, and a lot of these people bank on making income from deducting and depreciating non-rent related expenses.
