that isn’t the first time I’ve seen those statements thrown around on these boards.
Very true. I was basing off of the poster in particular given their comments in general over various threads. Certainly most of the time posters who say those comments know exactly how they are coming off (and I could have missed where this particular poster said something to that effect on another thread totally possible).

If that happens then that becomes the point as a society where we have to accept Covid is a part of our lives from now on. We won't stay closed forever, so will need to learn to adapt.

We can take better care of ourselves - quit smoking, lose weight if needed, keep up with doctor's appointments. Believe me, I'm yelling at people in my life now who don't take their HTN seriously. If we can reduce our chances at deadly comorbidities, we can reduce death rate associated with Covid.

Start paying attention to our minority and lower income communities who need better access to healthcare and get rid of food deserts. Does everyone realize they are the hardest hit with deaths from Covid? Apparently it's unhealthy to be poor. Time to fix our healthcare. Time to try and mend distrust of government. Time to try and build up the areas that need help. (yes, I'm looking hard at us Chicagoans) These will be difficult conversations on all sides, but maybe it's time to start.

And lastly be mindful of people at risk. Don't hug, wash hands, stay away from them if you've been sick. And for people at risk, be sensible in where you go - wear a mask if you have to, wash hands, and avoid large crowds if needed.

We will adapt. I actually meant this to be a positive post! I do believe we will have more robust testing which will help tremendously with contact tracing and containment.

:)
Dessert? No way.:)

If we lose immunity as fast as the common cold then we would need vacciness montly. There is a reason why we get colds so easily, we don't build much immunity at all.

A person doesn’t have antibodies to all the different common cold strains out there, and they’re always slowly evolving. We’re not losing immunity to the common cold.

There are more than a couple hundred known strains of the common cold and over a hundred known strains of the flu virus (influenza A or B).
The seasonal flu vaccine only includes about 3-4 strains. Flu vaccines are made to be as similar to what is likely floating around in a particular season. And, we don’t have vaccines to the common cold. Not only are there so many strains to try and target, it’s not worth as much the effort because a common cold does not cause complications or last as long as a flu.

I have a mortgage and a car note. Am I allowed to go to Disney?
I don't see those as debts. I'm talking about credit card. The poster didn't sound like he was complaining about a mortgage. If you are running up credit cards, then you need to have an emergency fund and no credit card debt before you even think of spending money on a Disney type vacation. We had a nice nest egg that totally disappeared with our first child's medical bills. I'm so glad we had it and it made our lives so much less stressful than if we had lived it up going to Disney in those early years. As I said, mortgage and cars( within reason) don't count. But if you are constantly worried about other types of debt, then I stand by my statement. Wait to go to Disney.

He is a she (?).

I'm amazed at how you ascertained all of that from the vague statement I posted! I didn't even realize I was complaining...

Again, just take care of yourself...

We're all fine in my household. Especially my cat.

:)

Oh boy there's just too much to unpack here. Not sure how you got here from what @Farro posted, but this seems a little like projection.

Personally, I don't care one bit what anyone else thinks I should do with my money. We're all adults here and probably don't need financial lessons.

Sorry guys. I taught financial classes to high school students. I went into lecture mode. Sorry about that. You are adults. I've just seen so many people make really poor choices. You are right. None of my business. Just a passion of mine. I apologize.

This is a tough one. I didn't vote, because I don't really know. Having been sick with it for over three weeks now and this being the sickest I've *ever* been, I definitely am afraid to do places like WDW without a vaccine or a really effective treatment. I don't ever want to be this sick again, or even sicker because I'm no spring chicken either. I would much rather have my annual COVID shot along with my flu shot and then go about my business in the reasonable hope that if I do get ill, it will be manageable.

I'm scared to go to a place like Disney now. All I can think of is being penned in wall-to-wall with lots of people after coming out of the Haunted Mansion stretch room, with everyone trying to get to the single file line. It's a nightmare! I was putting money away for a trip in 2021 for the 50th. I've stopped because there's no point. If a vaccine is developed by the end of 2021, I'll consider going back in 2023.

Ugh. I'm not specifically pointing out you, but I've heard this statement so many times and it drives me crazy because it's so ignorant. We are nowhere near close to herd immunity on this disease. You really need a vaccine for that. Otherwise your option is a significant majority of the population contracting the disease to become immune....and we will lose way too many more people to do that.

We really don't know that. The estimates on what percentage of cases we're not identifying are all over the place, and the R0 of the virus keeps getting modified back and forth. We need a lot more testing to say for sure how far we are from herd immunity (a measurement that will have to be conducted locally, on the state or metro level, because it is likely to vary wildly from place to place) and whether or not our medical system can handle us taking further steps toward natural immunity rather than waiting the couple of years it is likely to take for a vaccine to get us there.

There have been a few reports on loss of immunity, and yesterday Harvard University released a report saying immunity to the coronavirus may be temporary, similar to the common cold. So herd immunity may not be viable, except by repeated (annual?) vaccine.

Which is absolute worst-case scenario, almost to the point of not being worth engaging with unless we have good reason to do so, because realistically, our system and our culture aren't going to support that kind of sustained health campaign.

All I know is that I never experienced much economy discussion until I started reading the DIS. It seems to be a passion for people here. :confused3

It kind of is for me. It was on my short list of potential masters degree subject areas/professional concentrations.
