When will the contract extension expire for Disney Employees?

I think the military would consider making a bed a skill to learn .
Martha Stewart has an entire video on how to make a bed .
Maybe we should have housekeeping contests on Disney+Channel
Skilled or Not skilled You be the judge
Bonus for most creative towel designs judged by childrens reactions when they enter their Disney Resort room upon arrival day!

Being able to function in life involves basic skills. Doesn't make you a skilled worker in the job market. Making your bed in the military is a basic expectation. Not something you get a raise for. And Martha Stewart is a cheating felon, so I don't care what she says. She would still be eating dandelions out of the prison yard if it were up to me.

Deep water lifeguards at Disney do earn a premium over many other roles.

No surprise there. Definitely different than handing out ice cream bars.

But let's just say they are making $22 an hour. And now the ice cream bar guy that makes minimum (for Disney) wants that minimum to be $20. What does the deep water lifeguard say?

And that's the catch. People want to be compensated fairly against the market, but also think they should be able to survive off any job they work. But they also want their job to be compensated fairly compared to lesser skilled jobs. And they want cheaper prices when they pay for something. And they don't want services cut. And they want the companies in their 401ks to make lots of money for their retirement.

All that ain't happening.

How long can this go on without a set contract in place? Eventually one side will have to cave.

If you have a full time job you should be able to survive off it. That's the concept of a job. If you can't survive off a full time job, the concept of that job is a farce.

Also, you said people should just leave....they already have and will. There's a reason why you have to wait 30 minutes for an ice cream now....it's because Disney doesn't want to pay enough to recruit that position.

It's more complicated than that. Government paid people to stay home. Government pumped a lot of stimulus into the economy. It's been a mess getting them back.

I think it is in Union contract they are not allowed to strike or stage a Call Out Sick Day,
.

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a strike. Disney will cave quick if a park has to close for a day.
A strike wouldn't close a park for a day. Not all CM's are union members. There are a large number of management, CP and non-union CM's who would keep the parks running.

Notwithstanding my comment above, the contract technically terminated last October so any provisions in the contract aren't binding. The two parties are honoring the old contract for now.

Actually that’s not why it’s taking 30 minutes to get an ice cream. Disney is just running the parks with the skeleton crews.

The reason I know this is because if you are in the Disney College Program you can be scheduled anywhere from 30 to 60 hours a week and you cannot say no to mandatory overtime. My daughter has plenty of friends who are not getting over 30 hours a week. If disney wanted to fully staff those positions and pay to do it, they could. They just don’t want to.

You can survive. Maybe not the way you want to survive. I've worked full time and had a part time job to get by. I've had roommates to split the bills with. I didn't always live in the area I wanted to live in or drive the car I wanted to drive. And I didn't have children when I was working a job that wouldn't allow me to afford them. And on a lot less than $15 an hour. Not even a quarter of that. Nothing about the market says that any job should be a job you can live on your own the way you want to live by default. And obviously, they haven't left, because they are still there demanding a raise. By that logic, their wage is something they can survive on, because they are obviously surviving. They just want to survive better.

And I don't believe there is such a demand to justify such high pay for these types of positions. I believe, like another poster commented, that Disney is cutting back on staff intentionally. And I don't think that is just a Disney thing. Businesses are getting leaner and more efficient. I believe part of that is cutting back services and blaming it on lack of labor, when the real issue is the lack of affordable labor.

I’m curious, they are starting at $15 per hour and Florida minimum wage is$11-$12per hour?
In Ct our minimum is less than $15 and our cost of living is extremely high plus we get a ton of taxes taken out.
I work at the biggest hospital and a lot of people who hold a degree are starting at $16. I’m not saying that Disney workers don’t have degrees but I’m just curious if $20 per hour starting rate is really reasonable.
I only say $20 because that’s what I’ve read in a few articles. It might not be accurate information.
Starting rate at Chipotle in Mass is $19.
I think I saw a sign at either Home Depot or Lowe’s at $17….

They don’t need a degree just a pulse, and to show up on times.

Rate of pay is no longer based on the employees skill, it’s based on the employers need….

You need nurses bed enough you will pay them 100k a year to start.

Chipotle had stores closed for lack of staff…. So 19 and hour wasn’t bad.

And I don't believe there is such a demand to justify such high pay for these types of positions.
Do you also believe stores across America are adjusting hours, leaving stores a mess and giving up profits because they just don't feel like filling the positions?

The labor market changed during covid and the little guy wised up. The wealth needs to be reversed from the upper execs downward and the problem will solve itself. Plenty of CEO wannabes out there, so the demand is less and hence pay should be less.

We lost over a million people from the workforce due to deaths and retirement. Those people are not coming back basically ever. I agree with your point that Disney has been trying to get more lean, but not provding world class service will cause them to have to reduce prices as well.

Back in 2012, Disney filed for a patent on a mattress lift. A previous post suggested housekeeping lifts many heavy mattresses each day. If indeed this mattress lift was actually brought to fruition, the implication is many back injuries caused by lifting heavy objects could be ameliorated. The savings in workman's comp claims may cover the cost of installing such lifts. Anyone heard anymore of these lifts, if they are actually real? Anyone on prem that could look under the mattress today in search of such a bladder? Thanks

It could if the company kept just a bit less...🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
