My first trip was to WDW in 1978 for my 13th birthday. There was a blizzard expected in NY and my dad strapped our luggage on a sled so we could walk it out to the main road for the car to take us to the airport. Turned out the weather held off and we were able to leave from the house.
We stayed at the Golf Resort, which is now Shades of Green.
Major memories:
Space Mountain was new. When we got to the MK, my dad headed straight for it wanting to get it over with. I was very frightened, having never been on a rollercoaster before and he thought I was being overly dramatic. When the ride started, my dad, who was behind me, yelled out "it's a roller coaster!!!" He didn't realize it was a roller coaster not a dark ride.
Another memory is that at every parade we went to (seemed like we went to a lot of them...) one of the characters would stop to hug me or dance with me, one took my hat for a bit. We have NO pictures of this because my parents had been talked into a complicated camera that they couldn't work.
I remember we were stunned by the short lines. I suspect my mother quietly researched everything so we would have a good touring plan, but she never takes credit for that type of thing.
This year we'll be going in Sept very near the first anniversary of my dad's passing. So, I've been thinking of that first trip a lot and got a good laugh telling my kids about that Space Mountain ride. Knew I had to be at the Happiest Place on Earth during what will be a difficult anniversary after a difficult year.
Thanks for the OP.
