Really love the old photos that are being posted , :confused3 but when was the castle a cake and for how long !! :confused3 :Pinkbounc

We first visited in 96 when it was being transformed so it was half and half, with cranes around. Went back the following year when it was full cake. It wasn't until our third trip in 2000 that we got to see the Castle in its original glory!! Actually, that's the only trip I've seen it like that as this year it's still gold (although that is so much better than the cake!!)

Just thinking about the pepto bismol castle upsets me still. I sure hope that it will be back to its original style/ decoration when I see it next year, for the first time in 8years. I havent been since 99 :sad2:

I one of the few that loved the pink cake...I have a picture hanging in my entry with lots of other disney stuff of the Pink cake.

The Pink cake was not our favorite but we didn't hate it.

After all it was WDW 25th Birthday Mickey deserved a cake and we have a couple of pictures of it up also.

Thank you for putting my thoughts to words so well - lol!

I think the recent design with all of the gold colored gilding around the castle and the other decorations is much more favorable to the appearance of the castle. I thought the "cake" thing really detracted from what we wanted to see of Cinderalla's castle.

For myself, it's an icon you don't want to obscure. While Disney is brilliant with their creative abandon, that's one particular attraction that doesn't need to be messed with too much. Covering it with pink goo just didn't work at any level for me.

We didn't exactly like or dislike the cake covered with Pepto Pink, but we had seen the castle before and we knew we would be back to see it again. It was kind of fun (although I wish they had chosen a little less Pepto color of pink).

I felt really bad for the people who were on their first or first-and-only trip who saw it that way. We did hear some 'anguished groans' from people getting their first view of the castle who were expecting it to look like a castle and some of the little kids (mostly the girls) were crying because it did not look like Cinderella's castle.

I hated that cake. It was ugly and stayed up for too long.

Actually it was unveiled October 1 1996. All MK celebrations start that day since it was the opening day in 1971. The celebration ran until December 31 1997.

I liked the cake too.

I missed the cake castle!! Did not go to WDW in '96 or '97. (Not one of my favorite things.) It is not so bad now, just don't care for that "mirror" thing on the front.

I didn't mind the cake, it was different and TEMPORARY. Not like some of the changes of recent years where things are added to park icons and will never go away.

Yeah that 25th celebration lasted a few years... I thought the castle looked horrible too. But since they took that down it looks better than ever!! Hopefully they will never turn it that pink again! :rotfl:

I remember seeing pictures of the castle when it was a cake...a big pink one, right? Thing is, I went to WDW in '98 and '99, skipped 2000 and resumed trips in '01 and it was still a castle then...unless I have lost my mind, which may be the case.

...and when we were there in late August of 1996 it was half cake and half castle, with scaffolding all around! They finished it in the next five weeks though....

Ah OK...so it was a cake right in between our trips :cool1:
Fine by me....that thing was uuuuugly! :rolleyes1

We also saw it half and half in the summer of '96. We stayed at the Contemporary in '97 so had a good close up view of it then! I loved it then, still have my Tshirt and wear it proudly!!

But I can understand people's feelings who were seeing it for the first time as we just returned from DL and I was surprised to see that castle in pink! I had to ask how long it had been like that because I saw old pics around the park of it in blue/grey but they were really old. I finally found out it was just for the 50th. It was pretty in pink but for our first time I would've liked to see it in it's natural glory. Guess that means we'll have to go back!

I have pictures with me and my aunts with the castle half painted pink with the scaffolding there from August 1996.
