I bought in 1992 and in 20/20 hindsight it was a good decision. I sure don't remember it being easy to decide to plunk down over $12,000 on a new idea.

When, or maybe in what year, do you think it was the easiest for people to buy? When did it seem smart at the time?

Is now a good time for people to buy?

No, it wasn't an easy decision, but the free park passes sure helped :)

We purchased in '93 so there was more to actually see after a year's construction compared to your '92.

Enough of the resort had been built that we could 'see' Disney was doing it right. The sales presentation was totally non hard-sell, and we were familiar enough with our travel habits that owning at Disney would be right for us.

It was not a hard decision at all. We had total trust in the fact that this was Disney and not some other timeshare resort.

The free park passes was the clincher.

The facts that there are now 5 (soon to be 6) other DVC resorts that we can use our points at, that dues have actually risen below inflation rates, and that I could sell today for more than I paid, well, these items are all gravy.

Mostly, it's still another 39 years to go.....:Pinkbounc

I think I would agree with Caskbill, 92 was probably a little too much of a "leap of faith" for many people. 93 and 94 when you could see a reasonable part of the development and the park passes were on offer was probably the easiest ( still not easy to stump up the cash), maybe most obvious is a better phrase , time to buy in.

As to the secondary question, it's up to people to run the numbers for their own circumstances, but IMHO the basic maths of the system still hold up.

We bought in 1999 at $65 pt..........but I would say between 95-97 because of the free passes and because of the choice of different home resorts.

I truely feel that the BCV pre sale at 70pp with back dated points and no maint fees for half the year was catching the train before it left the station.

I had hemmed and hawed for years before this offer about DVC. When they made this offer (less than the VWL point price) and you did not have to sell back the points, I thought it was very easy. The location blew me away, and the cost of staying at yacht/beach was very high.

I had ablolutely no regrets , and when I saw it I added on before it was open.

Just out of curiosity... I realize that you did not have to sell back a year of points, but I believe you did get one less use year than VWL sales. I could be wrong, but I thought that was because of the resort being sold before opening.

...just curious

I think 97 was a good year to buy in, at least for me. I had been on the tour at OKW in 92, but it was a lot of money! By 97, with the opening of BWV, I was able to see what the future of DVc was, and it looked good. Besides, they offered Magical Beginnings, and I closed Dec. 31 for a March use year. I got $10 off per pt, and two months later I got all my pts for the new use year. Too bad Disney doesn't do that anymore.

I feel like a broken record everytime I say "we joined in '91", but you youngun's will just have to deal with this oldtimer.;)

We never had a single doubt about what we were doing. Here was a brand new resort being built, and we were going to own part of it!

Was it an easier/smarter decision? I don't know if I would say that. There are so many personal variables that have to be considered. I would say that whenever it's right for you is the best time to join.

Feb 2002 points were good to use from Feb 2002 even though BCV opened in July (at time of pre sale opening was slated for sept.) You did not pay maint until July, and the VWL was going for 75pp . when I checked the literature VWL was going for 72pp the year before and I couldnt believe I was able to get BCV for 70pp fully stacked.

Ahhh yes, however I bought VWL in Feb of '02, and got 2001 points.
I bought on the last day of VWL. BCV was going on sale the next day. My guide told me that indeed I would get an extra use year out of VWL. I would have bought at VWL anyway.....

Now that is an awsome deal!!!

They got me anyway because I am having so much fun with DVC I just bought BWV at 84 pp without a second thought.

I think once you get the guts to take the leap you ask yourself "what was I waiting for "

The best time to buy was when they offered free park tickets when you stayed at your home resort!

We purchased in 1992, but not immediately after taking the tour. Our guide was marvelous, but we pondered it a bit until the free park tickets were offered. Then it became too good to pass up.

Also, the prices at the Contemporary and the Beach Resort – where we tended to stay on our visits – continued to climb. It seemed a smart investment, knowing that we would be visiting WDW at least once per year. We have never regretted the decision…..we absolutely love it!

when I visited in Dec 92 - they had alot of it done - up to building 27? - but being an idot and listening to family I canceled - the next year I brought - they were working on the 30's that Sept when I visited for the first time as a member. It was kind fun each time to visit - because there was a little more to see!

oh yes we loved those free tickets! My brother still complaints about not having them - and he get free vacations!!!

but being an idiot and listening to family I canceled

Heck, all it took was knowing that my Stepmother-in-law hated it. We couldn't sign fast enough. ;) :p

We were so surprised by her reaction! We thought that she'd love being able to park her broom right outside the unit.:p

Is in deep dark doo-doo if StepMIL ever gets a computer.

I guess we are in the minority. When we heard about DVC in Feb of 1991 we never gave it a second thought. We bought in Oct 1991 site unseen through the mail. We had been waiting for something like this for years. Everyone thought we were crazy but for us it was one of the easiest and smartest things we ever did.
