When to rent a car?

My question is when do I make a reservation to rent a car? I will need one from March 3rd to March 6th. Renting in Fort Lauderdale, where we are flying in to, driving to Disney World and returning to Fort Lauderdale (long story). Anyway, I am seeing how prices are changed, some going up drastically. We were planning on using National, because I have a coupon. Now I am not so sure. If we pay now can they still change our reservation price? Also, are there extra fees when we return the car full of gas with unlimited miles? Also, does anyone know how long it will take me to drive to DisneyWorld. Some say 3 hrs. some say 4 hrs. I really do drive the speed limit. Sorry, this is just so confusing to me.

Hi,

My advice is: rent the car now from National OR the place that gives you the best price. Then keep checking back (every day if you want) to see if the price has gone down. If it has, you can cencel and re-book with no penalty. Meanwhile if the rate goes up, you are locked in to your booking rate. There is no need to pay up front!

As long as you return the car with the gas tank full there should be no additional charges.

Lauderdale to WDW is about 200 miles. You could make it in about 3 hours without traffic, but of course it also depends on where in Lauderdale you are starting from.

I keep checking regularly at www.kayak.com. I got Thrifty for $17/day for those exact dates a couple of weeks ago. That seems to be a busy weekend,though,so you may have a hard time finding something reasonable!
