When to go to fit into NYC school year?

My nephew had the brilliant idea of taking the kids down there for the long weekend of Rosh Hashanah, since the NYC schools are closed, but most other schools won’t be, thus keeping the crowds lighter than during regular school breaks. But for reasons they haven’t shared with me, they’re putting it off a year. At first this made me very happy, since we’d be able to join them. (We have a prior commitment this year.)

The problem though is that for the 2026-2027 school year, both Rosh Hashanah and Denali are on weekends, the one day of Yom Kippur doesn’t see enough (and I wouldn’t want to go that day). Plus, I’ve been spoiled and really don’t think a four day weekend is enough for WDW and a day at Universal. The last time I went with kids was taking my nephew back in the early 90s, and my husband’s nieces around the same era. Somehow they all got a week off, though I don’t remember if it was a regular holiday week or they took them out of school.

So my question is whether there’s a time likely to work for the NYC school year when the parks won’t be overly crowded. The only thing I can think of is late August, when most of the country outside the northeast is back in school. The advantage is that that would let us go a full week, and maybe take advantage of the lower mid-week airfares. But weather-wise, that’s a miserable time of year to go. (I haven’t ruled out the possibility of Disneyland instead, if I can talk them into it.)

So, any suggestions? Or just bite the bullet and go over the Xmas or sprint vacations?

(Aside: I thought there was a better forum for asking this question, so forgive me and point me in the right direction if there is. But as I said, it’s been ages since I’ve had this problem. We’ve been there multiple times since my nephews grew out of it, but we’re able to schedule ourselves whenever we want.)

Many thanks.

It will be busy when you come. Just pick the dates of your trip that make the most sense for your budget and time.

I agree that a four day weekend wouldn’t be enough time. If you have to choose between Christmas and spring break, I would go with spring. Virtually every school in the country has similar winter breaks, but spring breaks vary from mid-March well into April.

Vote for late August here. We are in RI so schedule is similar to NY and we typically travel mid/late August. Were in wdw last week and crowds weren’t too bad and hotel prices were decent. Just allow for the potential for travel delays thanks to storms/hurricanes

If you are concerned about heat, August in Disneyland really isn't much better than WDW, IMHO. I would probably opt for spring break if a 4 day weekend doesn't work well for you.
