When to go? new to DL!!

Well this is very discouraging

i wouldn't let it dissuade you , the above poster is just being honest. I can say going two weeks ago during a heat wave ( 98-100 degree weather) the parks were quite slow and crowds from locals were non existent.
It's much easier to deal with DL/DCA on a crowded day because they are so close versus the parks being buses away at WDW.

You can have an amazing time , just be prepared for high crowds. It's no reason to stay away :)

It will be crowded BUT don't let that discourage you! You can still get a ton done and have a great time, even with crowds, as long as you plan ahead. This means making maximum use of FPs, getting there at rope-drop to knock out as many rides as possible (many days I get in as many rides in the first 2-3 hours in the parks as I do for the whole rest of the day), taking a swimming/nap break in the afternoon when the parks are the hottest and most crowded, then staying late to take advantage of thinning crowds after fireworks and parades. The fact that you're planning for 4-5 days in the parks is good as well, since you'll be able to spread things about a bit more. I went mid-July a few years ago and was still able to ride everything I wanted with no more than a 30 minute wait, some (even e-tickets!) multiple times. I used RideMax on that trip and would highly recommend it to you since you're a newbie, but if you don't want to invest, then you should be okay making use of the Disneyland app and all the good tips you'll get on these boards.

Relax, you're going to have a fabulous time. :)

Honestly, why would you think that thousands of other people wouldn't want to go at the same time that you do? It's like any limited time event. The longer you wait, the more people you'll encounter who are also trying to see something one last time or before it ends. In this case, this is the 14th month of a 15 1/2 month event. Of course the remaining options will be limited if you have specific conditions, which as lower crowds. In addition to the 60th there's also a Star Wars overlay in TL, a new Frozen show, new version of Soarin, and several other new/updated things happening. Disney didn't stop growing with the 60th, they strive to bring in crowds all the time. They've been very successful at doing so for the last 14 months, with no indication that they're going to stop.

I knew it would be crowded. Disney parks are always more crowded in the summer. And I'm sure all the special events going on aren't helping. But this may be my only chance...and I won't get another break until Christmas. And we know how Disney crowds are at Christmas lol. I was invited by my grandmother as a graduation gift. And i think it would be fun to see it and see where my dad grew up. He lived in so cal for many years before moving here. I'm sure I can manage to still have an amazing time even with crowds. Just have to learn how to deal with them. I did fine with it I. WDW, I'm sure I can manage DL as well. And thanks again for everyone's tips!

No need to be rude. I didn't have this opportunity before. It was brought up recently by my grandmother who lives in so cal for a graduation gift before I start graduate school. Yes I know I'm not the only one who wants to see these things but I can still hope to have fun and make the best of it right?

It's also rude to insist that there is a special time when you could go during the second most crowded time of the year where everyone else who has planned for a year or more isn't going to disturb your time there. The reality of DLR is that the walkways are as small as 6 feet wide at certain points and that people will crowd into it regardless. No one is keeping the less crowded days a secret, you're insisting on something that doesn't exist. And you're asking for something on extremely short notice in a short time frame when many other people are in the exact same situation and planned ahead and are accepting of the fact that you will be there adding to the crowds for their trip.

Hmmm ok. I guess that makes sense. Schools start at different times here as well. Which would be a better option, July or August?
I was just looking on the Disneyland website and noticed some restaurants offer things such as reserved spot for paint the night and world of color. There was even one for the frozen show. Not sure I'm interested in that one though. Maybe one of the others though...but if you don't do that can you still see those shows?

Paint the Night is just a parade, you don't need to do a package to see it. I haven't seen it personally, but my wife said it was great!

World of Color also does not require a package. Make sure to get a Fast Pass first thing in the morning (it will not affect your other fastpasses).

The Frozen show also has FPs and does not require a package, however those packages you see offer some special pre-show offerings that you only get if you pay for the package.

Wow! Not once did I ever insist I was more special or entitled to something. It was just a simple question. I have never been to DL or the west coast. Again, others have had time to plan. I didn't. I was asked if I wanted to go, and who could really turn that down? No need to keep bashing and being rude. Just because I'm asking for opinions and advise.

Yes, you can still see the shows without buying one of the dining packages. For PtN, it's a parade, so you have to find a spot along the parade route. The caveat is that PtN is very popular, so front row spots fill up hours before the parade starts. If you can swing it, it's usually easier to find a prime viewing spot for the second parade of the evening. A popular option is to watch Disneyland Forever from Main Street or Small World Mall and then immediately move to where you want to watch PtN. It means about an hour wait (usually), but you should have a pretty good view of PtN. For Frozen, Live at the Hyperion, you can also get a FP for the show. The dining package guarantees that you'll see the show from a prime viewing spot (e.g., center front orchestra), but they do distribute FP for all three sections (orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony). For WoC, you can get a FP and watch the show from the FP viewing areas (both of which have locations with great view and locations with not-so-good views). You can get a sense of the WoC viewing areas in the WoC SuperThread (viewing area map is in the first post).

I don't think there is anything wrong about asking if there is a quieter time to visit, especially if someone isn't a frequent visitor to DL. WDW, surprisingly, has lower crowds in the summer than many other times of the year, so it's not unusual to ask about that at DL. To the OP: we found that if we go on the days when many of the APs are blocked out then it's a bit better, but it always seems crowded at DL lately. On the plus side, you save a lot of time getting from one ride to another or one park to another at DL (compared to WDW) so you can still get lots of rides in even on a busy day.

Thank you! I never been to DL so I don't know what to expect. I didn't think it was a problem asking for info. How do you know when APs are blocked if you don't mind me asking? I like how you always throw in the positives haha makes me stay hopeful
And positive as well.

Really though, there's no secret slow period around summer. There are only ridiculous periods where it's really busy.

If you look at the DL website under tickets, you can see the different APs they sell and their blackout dates. We are going in August (middle) because that is what works with our schedule, so we will just deal with the heat and the crowds. (We were just in WDW for spring break, and I have just learned to deal with the crowds and do my best to avoid the "top" rides during the busiest times of the day). Before we had to deal with school schedules we went in the off season, but one trip to LA was in August (it was for a good friend's wedding so we had no choice) and we learned to make the best of a busy park time.

The biggest downside to me is that there is no good discount on the DL hotels this summer while there is a great one at WDW, so I think by that we can tell that the DL parks are going to be more crowded this summer. DL is definitely worth visiting, and if you are really staying 4-5 days you shouldn't have any problem seeing it all. We are planning for only 2 days this time so we will have to pick and choose. Oh, and that thread a pp linked to (about DL for WDW vets) is really good -- make sure to check it out. There are many rides in DL that don't exist in WDW and I would focus on those since you've been to WDW several times.

And I did go ahead and book dining a day or two ago, but it really wasn't necessary, so it's not like WDW where if you are 2 months away you don't have any good options left. It takes much less time to plan a DL trip. If you like the Unofficial Guide or the touring plans app/website for WDW they also have one for DL. :)

I know you didn't ask this, but there is also a strong chance that Haunted Mansion will close at some point in the latter half of August to have the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay installed. It all depends on when HalloweenTime is starting in September, but they have not yet announced that information.

Haha I know what you mean about WDW at spring break. I was there for spring break last year. But since I've been to WDW so many times I know how to deal with it. DL is completely new but I'm sure I can learn and manage it. Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely be looking into everything.

Good to know. Haunted mansion is one of my favorite rides in WDW. But big thunder mountain another favorite will be closed during my next WDW trip. You gotta pick and choose your battles I guess. I'm just curious is it any different then the WDW one? Other than the special holiday one of course

How exciting! Like you, I've always dreamed of visiting the original park as well. I often come on here to read Info on it and try to make a plan so I can visit it someday. :)
Hope your dream comes true.

My dh and I went around the first weekend last Aug. and we had a great time. It wasn't wall to wall people. We park hopped for a 2 day trip. I loved seeing the parade and fireworks. We saw the second parade after watching the fireworks. We ate ice cream during the first parade and when it was over, we stood in the middle of the street to watch the fireworks. After it cleared out, we found a spot on the curb for the second parade. For us that worked great.

We had a laid back visit, got FP's for the rides we wanted and enjoyed a trip without our kids.

We have also been to WDW many times and we prefer the smaller, more themed parks at DL.

Have great trip and read the info in the above posts and on the Disney web site.
