When I was looking for flights, I had a certain price range in mind and when prices ever got close to it I was going to buy. I checked all the airlines available to me everyday. Sometimes multiple times a day. The prices were always the same, more than I wanted to pay and then for a 2 day period Delta had a sale. It was never announced, I just saw the prices because I was checking every day. I bought the tickets right away.
Now with delta that is the big question mark. I believe I am going to be ok, we fly on the 14th next month, but I am not sure if I would buy a ticket on them right now, if there were other options.
As for connecting flights with kids, I happen to try to avoid it. I wanted to get where ever I was going as fast as possible, plus always hated the chance of missing the connecting flight. My kids are older now, but we still try to get non stop flights when ever we can.
So, bottom line, have a price you are willing to pay, look at all the airline options you have and buy when the price hits near what you can pay. Personally, I would avoid delta, but many people feel that the airline and pilots will come to an agreement.
