We are planning on doing a surprise trip for our two kids in late February. I keep checking flights and they are about $330 per person right now . We have gone to FL about once a year for the last few years and I've always been able to get flights for about $250 or less per person. Is this a thing of the past or is it I'm just too far out from the trip and hopefully the flights will come down. Just seems crazy that for a family if 4 it would cost us almost 1300 just to fly. We live in Chicago and normally fly out of Ohare. Any suggestions would be great. I've checked Allegiant in Rockford and they aren't much cheaper right now.

Not sure it will be much different, but have you tried Southwest out of Midway? We live in NW Indiana and always fly SWA out of Midway. We are going to Disney in December and when fares were first released, they were $166/pp each way. Our return flight is still at $166, but I was able to get $99/pp going down when SWA ran one of their specials a few months ago. With that said, buying airfare is a gamble and there's really no telling if the fares will come down much or at all. I don't have a lot of hope that our return flight will come down, but I will keep watching and hoping. Good luck ;).

No one knows what airfares will do. Anyone who claims they do (including the 'wait until 'x' amount of time before your trip) is just guessing.

Book when you're comfortable with the cost. If you book with an airline that offers free price reductions, keep checking. If you're on a legacy airline and will be upset if the price drops after you book, don't look again.
