I am planning my first trip to Universal Studios. I am really clueless because I've never planned a vacation on my own before. I want to go the second week in October, but I can't make reservations until July because that is the earliest my husband can put in for time off in October. Is that waiting too late to make reservations?

Also when I look at the packages online and compare with just buying tickets and hotel separately it seems cheaper not to do the package. One of the things making the package more expensive is the vacation protection plan. Is that really worth it? I'm tempted to remove it to make the package closer to the same price as booking separately.

We removed the protection plan - figured saving 100 dollars was worth the risk that we might have to cancel unexpectedly. Flights getting grounded domestically (we're driving down to Syracuse to catch our first flight) isn't very likely to happen. And us getting sick and cancelling... not going to happen, either.

My son was sick as a... very, very pathetic puppy for several weeks before we went to Disney the last time, and in fact was being assessed in the cardiac unit two days before we left. But our doctor gave us the green light to go if we were careful not to let the kid wear himself out, so off we went!

So I don't think there's much that would stop us from getting back to Orlando - knock on wood!

P.S. I should add we ALWAYS buy travellers medical insurance for the entire family. Always!

Thanks for your help! I think I will drop the protection plan and go ahead and book through Universal. Without the protection plan the price actually goes down if we get the package instead of doing it ourselves.
