When to book airfare?

I've never booked airfare before. When can I expect to purchase for our trip in September? I'm seeing everyone talking about SWA, but saying that they haven't released fares that far in advance yet. (I also tried to download DING four times with no luck.) Does anyone have any tips for an inexperienced flyer and ticket purchaser? TIA!

Good airfare for September usually comes out in July/August.So I would definitely wait to book.If you book too soon you might end up paying alot more than if you waited awhile and see which way the airfares go.I have no doubt they'll flunctuate alot in between but hold out for the better fares.September is off season after Labor Day...
