the crew prayed they would be found....unfortunately, they were (as you see sharks swimming below)

IIIIT'S time for SHARK WEEEEEK! I love shark week!!

I've been watching The Deadliest Catch marathon today and Discovery keeps showing this commercial about Shark Week and it gives me the willies every time. It starts tomorrow shark lovers & haters. :scared1:

I told my wife I will be in the other room while she watches the Indianoplis story. I do not need to see reenactments of all those real life deaths. What am I going to get out of it? I already know a shark will win the fight if we are both in the water....

Do you not watch historical movies either where you know the ending however tragic it may be? Like Titanic? I'll watch some but there are a few I can't bring myself to watch. Like Schindler's List. I've never seen it and I don't think I ever will. I forced myself to watch Hotel Rwanda.

I was there

I am SO looking forward to SHARK WEEK!~!~~ Its the first time we will have our plasma tv and HD TV as well.

So much more to the story than just the sharks. Thanks for posting that perdido. I had no idea about the court martial and the Japanese sub commander testifying for the captain.

I see on the website they have a posting about the shark week show airing too.

Yeah, I read a great book about it a few years ago... I had bought it for my dad, and then borrowed it. Really a horrible story, the things those guys went through, and the Captain on top of it. Just sad that he committed suicide cuz of the guilt that he felt and the dishonor that they put on him. :sad2:

I watched! I missed the first playing, but caught the repeat airing at 1am. I stayed up until 3 watching. Amazing, but such a sad story!!! :sad1:
I love shark week, I saw the show about the 'air sharks', that was a great one too. :)

I was JUST talking to my husband about "Air Sharks"! That was a very cool show.

Yeah, so interesting! I've always loved the shots of the great whites flying out of the water, it was neat to learn why they do. I almost had a heart attack when the one guy was on the whale carcass though. I thought for sure he was going to fall in the water!! :scared:

We had storms here last night so I couldn't watch the Indianopolis story, so I have to wait until next saturday night when I can watch it again.

Such a fascinating but incredibly sad story. I can't imagine the terror those men must've been feeling, thinking that no one was ever going to come for them.

Yeah, can you picture floating in the ocean for that long!!! I only know about what happened from what I saw on the show, but the ending also made me wonder, if there were any of the small groups that they missed. One group found was just on the edge of their search, makes me think that a few had gone past that, and just floated after the search was over, hoping for rescue that never came. :sad1:

Whenever I see that thing about the Indianapolis I think about Robert Shaw's speech about it in "Jaws."

We watched it too. What a disturbing story. I think I read a book about it many years ago as well.

The air sharks were very cool but the guy on the whale carcass had us going :sad2:

Another terrible navy tragedy was the sinking of the Juneau. It claimed the lives of all 5 of the Sullivan Brothers. A movie, The Fighting Sullivans, was made in their honor. To this day I can't watch it without crying. You can read about them here.

So many great sacrifices. May we never forget. :sad1:
