When should I book airfare?

I have my package all set, but it's too early to get airline tickets. When is the best time to finally bite the bullet and order the tickets?

We are arriving June 25, 2006 for six nights; we have three adults and two kids (ages 5 and 7). Are there discounts for kids?

BTW, we would be flying out of Pittsburgh or BWI.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Mike, Pittsburgh now has SWA, so you're lucky there. I'd start looking in earnest around January. Having said that, if you find a fare that meets your needs and date, book it! Right now, fares from Pittsburgh and PHL are running about $79/one way on SWA and USAirways. They've been meeting each other's fares so far. We paid that price for our trip to WDW last month. But it could go cheaper! Also, enter your info into Expedia or Travelocity to get updates on fares. And, sign up for fare sales on USAirways, SWA or any other airline you're considering so you get e-mails about these events.

we have had great success with southwest refunding (either a real refund or in the form of a swa credit) money when the fare goes down... so, my advice would be to book it as soon as it is available, and then keep your eyes on swa.com, ding, and be sure to sign up for their emails... checking fares regularly... we just reduced our return flight from $115 to $49! now, when to use that $300 credit?

an off-topic question... i see you live in altoona and teach lit... may i ask what school? my sil lives in hollidaysburg and her ex teaches at st frances...

I teach at Altoona Area High School. Saint Francis of PA is about 25 miles from here in Loretto.
