It doesn't offer either side any protection because using PayPal to rent a timeshare is against PayPal's terms of service.

It is good for the owner, because for most Paypal Users, it comes right out of their account like a debit card, so you have your money. You don't have to worry about committing to rent and then they never send their check or it gets "lost in the mail". For a few people who are very new to PayPal, the money may come from their credit card, in which case you are no worse off than taking their credit card directly (except most of us are not set up to process credit cards). There is a merchant fee that Paypal will deduct.

You cannot purchase a timeshare using Paypal, but you can rent timeshares, hotel rooms, etc. The buyer does not get protection from Paypal for non-tangible items like rentals, however, only for physical products. Buyer protection at Paypal is primarily aimed at users of EBay.

You can’t use PayPal to buy or sell real property, including buildings, land, or anything affixed to the land.

Besides the direct sale of real property, we also don’t allow transactions that involve:

Timeshare transactions -- offers to buy, sell, or rent rights to the periodic se of a property.

Regardless of whether they *allow* it, they don't protect it.
