When renting, how many points do I pay for?

Hello all. I'm new to this whole process, and trying to get some information. I've read the majority of the FAQs I could find, but haven't seen an answer to this question yet (though I'm sure I can't be the only one who's ever asked)...

Let's say I want a 2-night stay at BCV in early August, when reservations cost 14points/night. So I need 28 points. I see someone on the board offering 40 points at $12/point. If I were to rent from that member, would I be paying that person for all 40 of the points he's renting ($480), or just the 28 I need ($336)?

Thanks for any pointers you can offer!

you would only be paying for the points you need to use (i.e. 28).

OTOH, the owner may decide it's easier to get rid of all his points at the same time, and prefer to make a deal with someone else rather than risk getting stuck with 12 pts he can't use or rent...

If you are not already a DVC member, you are not renting the points, you are renting a reservation.

How do you know how many points you need to rent a reservation? (I'm a newbie too and would love to stay on property in a 2BR vs. off prop)....we are planning to go Feb 21 - Feb 28, 2009 (7 nights).

there's a link to "DVC Point Charts" up in the top-right-hand corner.

Like Carol said, if you are not a member, the points are worthless to you. You are renting a reservation from a member. Knowing how many points you need will only give you a general idea of how much you are going to pay. It all depends on the member who actually "rents" you the reservation.
