When or did schools go back in session in the south?

Here in Birmingham, Alabama public schools started August 9th. My girls are in private school and do not start until August 28th. FYI do not get a fall break this year, so we are going to Disney the week of Labor Day holiday.

Star Valley Wyoming starts a bit later than most but not late enough! Aug. 24, that is this Thursday. Wow, what a fast summer.

The 180 day rule (not sure if it was state or federal) was in effect back when I was in school in the '70s. This was in the midwest. We always started after Labor Day and ended around June 20th. We never got a February vacation. Now in that area they start in August, get a week off in February, and end earlier in June. Who knows why.

Where I live in MA, kids usually start after Labor Day and can go until June 30 if there are a lot of snow days. Five are built into the calendar - if they use them all, next year my kids won't be out until June 25.

I know that this is mostly about schools in the south, but since the OP mentioned the west as well, I'll chime in that in Oregon we don't go back til after Labor Day.

Hey, Portland! Lived there for 15 years (in Hillsboro) before transplanting to Texas! I miss the trees! However I live in the DFW metro area, we are closer to WDW, a plus, I can drive if I want to.

Plano, TX started 8/9. We have fall break to look forward to, 9/30 - 10/8, we will be in WDW 9/29 - 10/12.

Schools that start earlier end earlier. I can't even imagine being in school well into June! In the south end of May is more like it! The main difference is that schools in the south have had air conditioning since it was first invented. Many school up north STILL don't have it, so they wait until September in hopes that things will cool off. Tradition is another thing. Most parents in the south don't seem to mind an early start, folks up north would complain. The whole school calendar is antiquated anyway, I think they should go year round and spread the breaks out. We homeschool now, but lots of our activities still follow the school calendar. BTW, the Texas legislature has decided that schools cannot start before late August starting next fall so.....no more fall breaks!

Can't imagine kids being in school until almost the 4th of July! Ugh!!

I know, BOO HOO, this is the 1st & last fall break we will be able to take advantage of. So I plan to make the most of it!

Delaware private: out 6/8; Return 9/5
Delaware public: out 6/13; Retun 8/28
Delaware charter: out 6/18; Return 8/21
The only week breaks are Easter and Christmas. Thanksgiving break and President's weekend are anywhere for 4 days - 7 days.

These are approximate dates, but you get the idea.

I've heard in Alabama, many school systems try to start as early as possible so that the students have as much time possible before they take the standardized tests in Spring.

School opening creeped back from labor day in the 70s to mid-August by the late 80s. The other change was a move from 8am-2:30pm to 7:50am-3:15pm

My DNephews started back on the 7th of August!

I'm just waiting until they figure out that we roamed all over the car, front seat, back seat, back windshield, etc. They are going to be furious!

we were military brats so we went to school in many different states, mostly northeast and south. I remember being in high school in the mid to late '70's in NJ. We had the 180 day rule, add in snow days and I think I graduated around June 28th! The last few states we'd lived in, in the south, started the same time we did in NJ- after Labor Day- but got out around Memorial Day. I remember being extremely jealous!

Here with them starting on Aug 2nd, they had registration on the 28th of July. We have 13 snow days, and two weeks for fall and spring break.
