We had been holding our breath in hopes of getting someone really great put into the narration slot of our CP date of 12/11/08. I moved our CP date from the 13th because I didn't care a thing in the world about taking my MIL to see Monique Coleman when the presenter list changed a few weeks back. So, today I see that Marlee Matlin has been placed in the 10th to the 12th TBD slot, which makes me very happy. At least my MIL knows who she is!

I love to watch people sign, even though I don't sign myself. I know that written and spoken language are/can be artistic, but sign language seems even more like a beautiful art form to me. I realize that it has a simple communication purpose, but it can be very expressive too.

I have admired Marlee Matlin as an actress for many years. I am so excited about this opportunity. So, does she speak and sign? Does she just speak and someone else signs, during the performances that are listed as offering sign? Does she just sign and let her sign interpretation companion speak? How does this work? TIA

If memory serves me correctly, Marlee signs and her regular translator (I'm not sure if that's the correct title for him or not) speaks. I only saw part of her performance once but that's what I remember--hopefully someone else can confirm this, or tell me that I'm remembering wrong.

I saw her a few years ago, she signs and her translator (Jack I believe) does the speaking.

Marlee's voice isn't understandable enough (especially with amplification and music in the background) for her to speak through the whole performance. She signs and her interpreter speaks.

Hi guys! Teacher for the deaf/hard of hearing here! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Marlee Matlin...I would love to see her at the show but we won't be there! :(

Anyways, though I have never been to see her in the show, I feel sure that she will sign. Year ago when she won her academy award she voiced her part of her acceptance speech. The deaf community was VERY upset over the fact that she did not use her natural language of American Sign Language to accept her award and it honestly hurt the deaf community's feelings. The took it as her being ashamed of her language. Make sense??

Since then, even on Dancing w/ the Stars, she has used ASL and her interpreter speaks for her....though on an occasion or two she may try and voice some stuff. Anyways, I bet she'll sign and it WILL be beautiful! Enjoy! :thumbsup2

We saw her a couple years ago. She signs and her interpretor speaks. Marlee did speak to the crowd at the very end of the show. She showed so much passion in her performance -- we just loved her!

Who will be in the December 13-15 slot? The DIS is still showing it as TBD.Thanks.:)

We saw her a few years ago. At first I was disappointed, but she was wonderful! She signed and had a guy serve as her voice. I couldn't believe how much emotion she could convey. It was wonderful. She did speak to us briefly at the end.

ok, i am not seeing Marlee Matlin any time except after xmas... can someone link me to where it says she will be there the 10-12?

I am there right after that, so i am hoping she'll stick around!

I hope she's not changing her dates I booked CP package for 12/29 just to see her. BF doesn't even want to go, but is going because he knows I love her. I hope she isn't moving dates. I guess I'll start thinking of a back up meal incase we cancel our CP.

According to Disney's website it's Monique Coleman (from High School Musical).

Of course, this list is constantly changing lately....when the very first list came out Monique was 13-15...then she got changed to 10-12, and now it appears she's back to 13-15. Patti La Belle who was in the Dec 1-3 slot on the original list was dropped a few days later and no one has filled that slot since.

I know it says that it is subject to change, but this is getting ridiculous. I've made and changed these reservations so many times my spreadsheet has an eraser hole. SO....I give up.....mark me down as one of those awful double ADR holders....I now have an ADR for Dec 1, Dec 10 and Dec 13. I could care less about Monique, but it would make my kids esctatic (especially since they think even with the changes it's not happening cause they think we're leaving Dec 7, instead of Dec 14, lol). I'd love to have seen Patti La Belle and I'm still holding out for her to go back in the Dec 1-3 slot....and Ms Martin sounds like she would be a very interesting speaker/signer. I had to goodle to figure out who Brian Mitchell and Virgina Madsen are so not overly interested in them.

So....flame me if you will but until Disney can settle on a speaker I'm keeping my ADRs and my options open. I had to put a credit card hold for all three of them, so be assured that I'll cancel them, but at this rate I'm thinking it may be 3 days before the show, as hopefully they won't change them THAT close will they?

We saw Marlee Matlin a few years ago. At first I was hesitant, but her presentation was beautiful & full of emotion. I would love to see her again at CP.

She did a beautiful job when we saw her a few years ago. She did not speak but only signed and her inturpertor signed. My little sister was in the CP when Marlee was there and came to visit all the kids before the show and my sister said she was a very nice friendly woman. I would have loved to meet her.

It has changed several times recently. I am hoping that we keep Marlee! I am so excited. :woohoo:

I got to see Marlee on the 12th. I'd booked a CP dining package when her original dates were at the end of December. By total fluke, I checked in October or November and saw that she was scheduled for the 10th through 12th. Fortunately, I was able to change all of my reservations without any trouble.

Marlee was fabulous. You can tell she's really enjoying herself...and she's not even Christian (she's Jewish). :) I'd definitely make plans to see her again in the future.

We saw her a few years back. Didn't know who the narrator was, just happened to stop by. It was fascinating to watch her sign the show while her translator spoke. I wouldn't mind seeing her again.

We saw her on the 11, very good presentation and beautiful music. We noticed that when she was not signing (during the singing) there was a person doing the signing for the musical parts. We were very lucky to be able to walk into the show to watch without waiting in line or paying extra for the dinner package. Virginia Madsen was very good also on Monday.
We would be happy to see the CP no matter who the presenter is.

Marlee Matlin's interpreter is Jack Jason.
I saw her on the 12th and it was wonderful. She narrates beautifully and Jack Jason interprets for her. That combined with Angela interpreting the music made it a truely wonderful evening.

Some definitions
Signer: a person who knows sign language and can use it to communicate.
Translator: person who changes written communications form one language to another like written English to written Spanish
Interpreter: person who changes oral communications from language to another as spoken English to spoken Spanish or spoken English to signed American Sign language or any other sign language. Emphasis on the word LANGUAGE.
Transliterator: Person who changes a language to a manually coded language like English to Signed English.

Jack Jason and Angela are interpreters and have trained as such. They change the language so the message can be communicated to a person who does not hear in their own language. They are not just signers. Marlee Matlin is a signer, as is my oldest daughter. Neither is trained to interpret. Marlee Matlin is deaf, my daughter hearing but both can communicate in sign language. Even Children of Deaf Adults (CODA) may not be able to interpret from one language to the other even though ASL is their first language.
