When is hurricane season over?

Just cancelled our trip for later this month. The kids are heartbroken so I have promised to start planning a new trip as of today.

Everything was ready including the suitcases being packed

From what point do we not have to worry about hurricanes?

Officially, Hurricane season runs from June 1st thru November 30th.

The peak of the Hurricane season is right about now (Mid Sept). There is another minor peak around the beginning of Oct. See NOAA chart .

I think what is unusual about this hurricane season is the number a landfalls in the same localtion (central FL) with a possible 3rd in the area.

In the last 30 years, how many times has Disney had to close due to hurricanes... once, maybe twice?

They had only previously closed for a full day (for any reason) for hurricane Floyd a few years ago. There have been other partial day closings (such as 9/11).

Lema, since hurricane season is half the year it will be very hard to NEVER schedule a trip during that time unless you are very flexible. We are going down in early October. As long as the planes are flying we will go. Disney is its own little city as far as utilities go so the possibility of losing power, ect., is very slim if you are staying on property. Also, Orlando is so inland that it really is rare for them to take a hard hit. This year has been really bizzare, but I would not let hurricane season affect my vacation timing every year. I know people are scared right now, let's just pray Ivan goes out to sea!

We will be there the first weekend in October. I am not that worried about the weather.

This year has been extremely unusual. The last time Florida had two major hurricanes make landfall was 1950. I would just make my plans and be ready to be flexible if there is a storm.

It's unusual that in October/November a hurricane forms. But this season has been very active and weird, those 2 hurricanes that have gone to Florida were at first coming here (Puerto Rico). Even Ivan was thought at first to pass near us. :shrugs: Mother nature knows what she's doing.

Anyway, I would also make plans and go for it.

Is the only reason you canceled based on the "possibility" of another hurricane ? Or were there other factors...I certainly am not changing our plans for the end of this month...

We have a trip to WDW planned for the end of this month (Sept.), for the 2nd half of a 2-week trip. We are actually planning ON Disney if nothing else!! The 1st 1/2 is supposed to be at a beach condo on the west coast, but if that area gets hit and we can't go, we are still banking on the WDW part of the trip. Someone already mentioned that their power systems and controls are all underground, and their central location makes them at least a bit less vunerable.

Holidays and summer are mobbed, mid-winter can be chilly (and no water parks), and spring can be busy with school vacations.

Crowds are much less in the fall months, and the weather (hurricanes aside!) is beautiful...Go and have a wonderful time!

Just FYI, we have traveled to Florida in September every year for the past 9 years, and our trips have never coincided with a hurricane strike. This year, we went the final weekend in August, so by luck we still missed the weather. It's just the luck of the draw.

I grew up in hurricane country in coastal Louisiana; no way am I letting hurricane season restrict my travel habits for 6 full months, including my child's entire summer vacation. That said, if I were the cautious type, I would skip August and September, and perhaps the first 2 weeks in October.

I have been planning my birthday trip for 2 years now, I'm not going to let a little thing like a hurricane stop me! I cannot control the weather. I'll just make the best of it if anything happens. If a hurricane hits while I'm there and the planes are grounded, then my vacation gets extended.
