When is Carmagedon? aka: will I get stuck in the 405 closure?

Just wondering what the dates are for the closure of the 405. I am there from July 7 until July 15 and just wondering about getting to and from the airport as well as driving around.

I would like to know this to as I am there the same time as you are!!
Is the 405 the same as the #5?

No, they are different highways but once the 405 shuts down traffic is going to be a nightmare on every other route.

Here is a news story on the closure of the 405:

The 405 will be closed for a 10 miles stretch between 101 and 10. This is NORTH of LAX.

However, this is a HUGE event that will affect every freeway in the area. LAX has 170,000 passengers and 20,000 employees expected each day.

If you are going from DL to the Long Beach airport, this should not effect you since the closure is substantially north of where you are and will impact LAX instead of Long Beach airport.

But I would recommend that you allow an extra hour just to be on the safe side.

I am booked non refundable to fly out LAX on Sunday 7/17. Our flight leaves at 11:30. I will be driving a rental car from DLH. Any hints or tips. I have driven around la quite a bit and am not usually worried, but I can't miss my flight. I was planning on leaving hotel by 8am. Any help from locals would be great;y appreciated. I will have a gps with me. Thank you in advance!

If you are leaving from Disneyland area just take Ball all the way to the Long Beach airport. You'll avoid everything and it won't take you an extra hour.

My suggestion to you is to take Katella West to the 605 North to the 105 West and you'll end up right at the airport. I suspect that the I-5 will be the most popular alternate route. Taking the 605 should get you around that. Katella is far enough away from the 405 it won't be considered an alternate route for freeway travelers, but is a straight shot from DL to the 605. We take that route frequently.

You will stay off the 405 completely. The 105 will be busy but it should be better than trying to stick it out on the 405.

Another option, if this route turns out to be crowded, is to take the 91 all the way west until it turns into Artesia, then follow Artesia to Sepulveda and go north on Sepulveda, which will take you directly to the airport as well.
