When is a Target REDcard 5% discount not a 5% discount?

Answer: When it's only a 4% discount!

Just wanted to share with everyone what happened today when I went shopping at Target. I purchased a Chi hair straightener for $99.99. As it was the only item I bought during that transaction, the subtotal was $99.99. After the line with the subtotal, was the line listing my REDcard savings. Instead of being $5.00, it was only $4.00! Unfortunately, I didn't notice the error until I got home, so then I had to make another trip back to the store. At customer service, they got out a calculator to figure out that 5% of $99.99 is $4.995, not $4.00! They ended up giving me $0.99 in cash back (the associate claimed that they always round down). I decided not to argue about the $0.01. If it hadn't been for the fact that there was only one item on my receipt, I probably would never have noticed that I was not, in fact, getting the full 5% discount that REDcard holders are supposed to get. It makes me wonder how many other people this is happening to since this is something that is programmed into their system. It may not happen with every transaction, but obviously it happens with some. 1% may not be a lot, but a percent here and a percent there adds up to a lot of extra money for Target! Just wanted to pass the info along so people can double-check their receipts!

The same thing happened to me yesterday! Thought maybe my math was rusty but you just confirmed it for me.

I always look at my receipt and do the mental math. I just move the decimal for 10% and then cut in half.

Its quite possible they had some weird systems issue with Black Friday. My husband is in ecommerce and I've only seen him to sleep and shower since Wednesday morning. Last night he decided the 40 minute each way commute was eating into precious sleep time and stayed in a hotel close to work.

I had the same problem and went to Target today to get it corrected and found out what the problem is..... On items purchased that have a gift card included the 5% discount is on the price after the coupon is subtracted from the total. So the Chi Flat Iron was $99.99 - $20.00 = $79.99 the 5% discount was on the $79.99 price. Not great but understandable.
