I've read that people are checking multiple times a day and finding some great prices that don't last long. I'm wondering if these people use expedia or something like it or, are they going straight to the car site.
I can only speak for myself, but I go straight to the car rental websites. The travel booking engines are OK, but I have better luck on the rental car websites.
I use Expedia to cross check all kinds of travel including car rentals, but I have never booked with them. After I narrow down I then go directly to the specific sites.
I second carrentalsavers. It saves a lot of time having the coupons and discounts already built in. I've booked through them 7 or 8 times and never had any issues. You get a confirmation number directly from the rental agency so you can verify your reservation.
I go between carrentalsavers and hotwire. If I can't find a good price on carrentalsavers, I keep an eye on hotwire for a good price, then go to priceline to beat the hotwire price. Searching for a rental car is usually the worst part of my travel planning. It is such a racket!!! If you hold your face just the right way when the wind blows, have the right secret word, you can find a good deal.
