When do you lose points as opposed to carrying them over?

I'm a bit confused about the point system and carrying them from one year to the next or losing them. How far can you carry them...is there a cutoff and then you lose them? What would be a scenario for losing them?

I'm trying to understand why you would rent your points out as opposed to carrying them over and using them in the future.

You can bank points into your next use year only within the banking restrictions. So if you don't bank in time, or use within the appropriate use year, you would lose your points. Reasons people rent are many: Want to use the cash to travel elsewhere, have more points than they need in a year, can't go in a year and want to recoupe some of their dues, bought a resale with banked points that they can't use before expiration, etc.

To bank 100% of your points you must do it 6 months into your use year. For example, my use year is Feb so I have until the end of July to bank 100% of my points. If I plan a trip in the fall and later have to cancel I will be past my 100% window and may not be able to bank all of the points to the following year. Also, once you have banked you can not bank those same points again. So if I bank this year (2003) to 2004 then do not use all of the banked points in 2004 then I will lose them in February of 2005. Another reason people rent is to use the cash for a non DVC trip.

People rent for a lot of reasons, one of which is likely to make a few bucks to cover dues.

Points are issued annually on the first day of the use year (like Feb 1 to Jan 31; can start other months also) and then must be used by the end of the use year unless banked. You can bank them into the next use year; however that ends it--you must use them (or otherwise lose them) in that second year because you can't bank them again into a third year. Thus, you have up to but no more than two years to use points after they are issued.
