When do you consider clothes dirty?

I guess I fall in the extra clean category. If it was worn or hit the ground etc, it gets re-washed. But in defense of my family, I find laundry to be a soothing activity. I love to fold. So much that no one dare tries to fold at my house, unless they do it "my" way! I also do light cycles on clothing that had hit the ground or really wasn't worn long.

I guess I'm in the minority here as well. If it touched your body for any amount of time it goes in the hamper. Everybody has their own hamper and I do laundry by hamper when it's full. That way I don't have to figure out whose sock/shirt is whose.

And bath towels do not get re-used. eww.

I used to be one who would consider something dirty if I wore it -- regardless of the amount of time. Threw on some jeans to walk outside and get the mail? Those go in the hamper. Put on a sweatshirt over my T-shirt b/c I was cold while I watched a couple episodes of NCIS? Dirty clothes!

A semester in Italy changed all that. First -- doing laundry was freaking expensive! Second -- I discovered that it was completely normal among my friends to wear something (particularly jeans) more than once before washing them (barring stains, smells, etc.).

Now, I vacillate. Sometimes I'll wear an item a couple times before washing, and other times if it touches my skin I feel like I need to toss it in the hamper.

And re: the towel thing -- I, too, will often use a towel twice (esp. b/c I use one for hair and one for body) before washing it. But I remember a Dilbert comic where the characters talked about that, and one said, "I'm the cleanest thing in the house when I get out of the shower, so the towel actually gets cleaner each time I use it." Then in the last frame, he says, "Are towels supposed to bend?"

Hee!

Our trips to France and Italy actually pushed us further into the 'wash the clothes' camp.

Luckily my DH already does most of the laundry..LOL..so its not skin off my back..I just am the one to fold and put away

Which are exactly the chores he avoids when he tosses the barely worn item into the hamper;) DS does the same thing because he HATES folding.

Everyone except DS (see note above) at my house considers it laundry if it smells or looks dirty (underwear and socks are laundry of they have been worn even for just one minute though). For DD13 that is pretty much one day of wear (puberty kinda stinks:rolleyes:), and it is for the rest of us in the summer as well. In winter DH or I may wear jeans up to 5 or so times and tops 2 or 3 times. PJs tend to last a week. Outer layers (cardigans, sports jackets) can go for ages. Not only does this require less work and less water and energy usage, but the clothes last a lot longer too.

He also thinks its dirty if its on the floor. So, if he pulled out a shirt, didnt wear it and it fell on the floor, when he cleans up, it ends up in the hamper

Of course it depends on the floor. I've seen some people's floors that if the shirt fell on the floor then yes, it is dirty! :rotfl:

Ahhh... so you've been in my kids' rooms...:lmao:

Seriously though, if it's on the floor it gets washed - dirty or not. As I tell DD20, you should not have to smell your clothes before you put them on and, as your mother, I certainly don't intend to...

I also wear my get-home-from-work-sitting-around-the-house clothes for several days before I wash them. UNLESS I've been sitting outside and sweating or something.

In the winter, I'll wear things a few times before they get washed. In the summer, I wash things after one wear unless it's something I've only worn for an hour or so and didn't sweat in.

I couldn't care less what my DH does....I do not do his laundry. He is on his own with that. :lmao:

I consider my clothes dirty when:
1) I've sweated in them
2) worn them twice
3) they actually have dirt/spot on them

That's kind of a hard question to answer..

Let's see.. If I was outside raking leaves; cleaning up the yard; breaking up branches for kindling for the campfires; etc., and came back inside for the day, obviously those clothes are "dirty" - and go in the hamper..

If I'm sitting at the table coloring (LOL); sitting here DISing; reading a book; etc., and I'm not sweating - nor have I spilled anything on myself - there's no reason I can't wear the same clothes the next day - or maybe even two - for the same activities..

My version of "jammies" (a sleeveless men's athletic t-shirt and a pair of shorts) - minus any sweating - can usually be worn to bed at least 3 times..

Towels? Since they are drying "clean" hair - and a "clean" body - they can certainly be used more than once..

Sheets and pillowcases I'm a little fussier about.. Love the smell and the feel of a freshly made bed.. Although I do make my bed every day, I've cut back to changing the sheets and pillowcases to every other day.. (And remember - I'm a widow - so there's no one else in the bed with me to dirty it up.. LOL..)

I think we - as a society - really waste an awful lot of water and energy that need not be wasted.. Unless you're doing really grimy work - you sweat profusely every day - or you're constantly spilling things on yourself - there's no valid "need" to wash a piece of clothing that has only been worn a matter of minutes or hours..;)

I would say it would depend: Now if your DH went outside to mow the lawn came back in after 2-30 sweaty took off said clothes, then yes, wash them.

But if he was just chilllin, decided to put something else on; he would be doing all parts of the laundry. I don't let people make more work for me. That is something my DM would do and either she can do her own laundry or stop it.

I did not read the thread but when I was diagnosed with a dust mite allergy the allergist told me not to put clothes back in the closet once they were worn becasue the skin particles on them feed the dust mites.

So we don't. If I am going to wear something again it gets folded and placed on the dresser but never in with the clean laundry.

Any clothes I have worn for the day are considered dirty in my mind. If I wear them for a couple of hours and sweat in them, they are dirty. If I wear them for 10-15 minutes and haven't spilled on them, they are folded up and used again.

My DH has a habit of wearing jeans 2-3 three days, to me that is gross. You wear them for the day, they are dirty and should go in the wash.

I have pj's that I wear, usually only to bed and I will wear them all week and then wash them. If I wear pj's to lounge around the house in the evening I may or may not wear them again depending on what I am doing and if I am eating.

Opposite problem here. DH has come down wearing dirty clothes, and I have to ask him "You're not wearing those, are you?!" Most of the time, he didn't notice the spot/stain. :confused3

Now, my kids are another story. They'll wear a pair of khakis and a polo shirt to church...wear them for an hour, come home, and throw them in the wash. Now as soon as we get home, I remind them to fold their church clothes and put them away.

I wear my shorts/pants 2 or 3 times before I wash them, unless I spill something on them, or if they are sweaty. Shirts, I wear only once!:thumbsup2

My dh will wear pants/shorts a couple days, I am in the camp once it touches my skin its dirty! My teens, whether they wear it or not, it usually ends up on the floor. In my boys room, I can not even take the vacuum in there at the moment...its so disgusting. The girls room isn't really too dirty but they have clothes everywhere mixed together, they have no earthly idea what is really clean or dirty.

I end up doing most of the laundry anyway so I don't really worry too much about it. The one thing I do wear more than once is PJ's. I agree with the I have a clean body and hair so I can wear my sleep pants a couple days. Towels, I am bad about, I rarely use it more than once. My children have inherited the disorder. DH, he would use one for a month. Poor guy has no idea why he got stuck with us!

Generally, if I wear it, it is dirty. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

If any of us has spent more than 10 minutes out in the hot Georgia sun, our clothes are definitely going to need a run through the wash. We're dying here. In the winter we can get by with washing things after 2-3 wearings. Jeans go longer than anything else. Christian's clothes get washed every day. He's not hard on clothes, but he is very messy. He can't wear anything more than once.

I'm with the OP's husband. If I wear something once, it's 'dirty' and goes into the hamper. I don't much care how long I was wearing it or what I was doing.

Personally, the idea that the OP wears her clothes for 2-3 days kinda skeaves me.

ITA. If it's been worn, it doesn't get put on again. Exceptions include outerwear but I wash those often anyway. DFiance is the same way, luckily, because I think it's gross not to.

Underwear and socks~ clean in the am and changed after afternoon/evening shower if I take one

Bras ~ 3-4 days unless excessive sweating which would be very rare

Shirts/tops ~ clean every day

Pants/shorts ~ wear at least twice unless soiled

Nightgown ~ 3-4 days

Towels ~ every 3 days or so

I occasionally change out of work clothes, into hang-around clothes for an hour or so and then either into my nightgown or clothes to go out. This outfit (usually shorts and tshirt) I might wear several days.

We don't want to talk about sheets and pillowcases:scared1:

With the exception of sheets, etc., I am on the same page as C.Ann; using the resources to wash clothing that has hardly been worn is wasteful. There are many ways we can all do our part, refolding and wearing clothes that you've worn for only a little bit and are clearly not dirty is an easy fix:)
