My puppy is almost 13 months old now. My poor toes get attacked all the time. When will he outgrow his chewing stage?

My pom bites at my ankles while I go upstairs still and she is 19 months old. She also chases feet and hands under the covers at bedtime!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/1070.gif' border=0></a>

I have a 6 yr old "puppy" and she still chews anything! Her sister thankfully is a non chewer. Good luck!

I guess my toesies are destined to be puppy chow for awhile.

Kathy, Boo also chews on my fingers at bedtime. I have to hide them under my pillow as soon as I can or he terrorizes me.:teeth:

I think it's something to do with their teeth Shannon.

I can't remember how old Prince was when he stopped chewing

Shannon, make sure he has plenty of things to chew on. But if you want him to stop chewing on you, you have to stop him. Put him off the bed each time he goes for your fingers.
Does he know sit and down? Now is a good time to teach him if he doesn't. If he does, put him in "down" each time he goes after your toes and give him something to chew on.

Good luck.

maybe he likes the way your toes smell

Skippy is a chewer also. He's a year old this month and attacks just about everything with those teeth. Tonight he's bored with the chew sticks. Eek!

My 6 year old westie still chews. I make sure she has plenty of nylabone type chew toys on hand. She also still steals socks, not to chew, but just to have next to her.

Shelby (in the pic below) just turned 5 this month and still chews.

Try "yelping" loudly each time your puppy bites/chews on you. This mimics the way mom and littermates got the point across so they learn not to bite. Or say "no" loudly or "ouch". Something quick and loud to startle so they know they caused it. We use bitter apple too so there is also the "nasty taste" to reinforce the "yelp". Good luck, some "get it" sooner than others.

At 13 months old he should be learning that it's not "ok" to chew on your poor toes. After getting his attention with the "yelp" replace your toes with something extra special (and exceptable) to chew on. He'll get the point eventually. Always praise, praise, praise when he switches to the exceptable chew item.

Hang in there,

Thanks for the advice everyone.:) I do give him other things to chew on, but he'll spit those out if my fingers and toes are anywhere nearby. I yelp in pain and he'll stop for a second (and I do thank him for not chewing on me), then he'll try to chew on them again (then I yelp again). I'm not sure if he's in a chewing stage, if he thinks it's a game, or if he just likes the way my fingers and toes taste.

Depending on the dog, it's been my experience that some of them end the chewing stage when they get so old they lose their teeth! lol

My dog is a golden/shepherd mix, looks mostly like a golden and I think there is something about those retriever type dogs that makes them keep chewing stuff for a long time.

She destroyed a sofa in the basement, once :earseek:

I think she stopped about age 8. *sigh*

Tabasco sauce works wonders. <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/12/12_13_6.gif' border=0></a>

My first dog tried to chew the sills off the windows until I put Tabasco sauce on them.

My second dog would want to chew on my hands when I was in bed reading. I put Tabasco sauce on my hands and he did not like that. Then it got so I only had to pick up the bottle and he would stop. When I was moving several years later I found the bottle of hot sauce in my nightstand. If someone else had found it they might have thought I was into something kinky.

The tabasco will not hurt them but it usually discourages them.
