When did your ds/d stop carrying a Disney backpack?

I'm just curious. Someone posted here on the budget board about a month back that TRU had their backpacks on sale. I let my 7 yr old daughter go through them all and surprisingly, she chose a Cinderella backpack and lunch box yet again. She's gone with Disney every year so far. Anyways, this obviously made my heart super happy but she has also been homeschooled this past year and a half, so I'm wondering if any other 2nd graders still carry a Disney Princess backpack? She's pretty independent and sure of herself so it won't bother her much if anyone made fun of her for it,but I'm kind of just curious now. She'll be starting private school this year.

The last year my dd8 had a Disney character backpack of any kind was preschool. In kindergarten she had one with a monkey, I can't seem to remember what she had in 1st grade but last year she had a Justice messenger bag which she will be using again this year. I just asked her if anyone in her class last year had princess backpacks and she ssid no.

My ds11 has alwsys had solid backpacks. Last year he got a Nike string style backpack which is still in new condition.

I guess if that's really what she wants I would let her but also be prepared to replace it.

Preschool was the last time either of my kids had a Disney backpack. My youngest is entering fourth grade this year and has used LL Bean backpacks since kindergarten.

Preschool was the last year for Character backpacks in my house too. DS is going into second grade and wanted an Under Armour backpack this year!

I have a boy so maybe it's a little different but the last time my son carried a Disney backpack was in preschool. However, he's getting ready to go into 3rd grade this year and he's debating between an Agent P backpack and Angry Birds....So he may go back to Disney this year.

I think Grade 1 was the last year for a character backpack. ds is going in to grade 3 and some of the kids still use them, I just couldn't find one that was sturdy enough for him because he's hard on them.

My DD is going into 3rd grade this year.

Kindergarten she had a Justice back pack and the last 2 years an Under Armour one. I thought she wanted Vera Bradley this year but nope Under Armour again.

My daughter HAD to have a Hannah Montana bookbag for 3rd grade (5 years ago now, sniffle-sniffle) and we even ended up driving an hour away to a larger city to find it. She is in 8th grade this school year and doesnt carry character bookbags because she has to have a larger and better constructed bag to carry her load, but DOES still carry character purses - Tink and others

My 12 YO still had a Tink lunchbox last year. I asked her if she really planned on carrying it all year. She said yep! One day she told me someone picked on her about it and her response was, "what's the big deal, I love Tink?" and "don't you have a beach t-shirt that you wear from when you went on vacation? What is the difference?" After that, it was a non-issue. She also carried a "Nerds" purse.

DD7 had an Ariel backpack that she chose for second grade last year.

She is entering 3rd this year and I am getting her an LL Bean solid backpack this year. I was going to get her one last year but she insisted that she really wanted the Ariel one. DH said to let her have it b/c she wouldn't want a character one much longer and he was right. She is completely over princesses this year.

Kindergarten but she just gave up the SCOOBYDOO lunch bag after 3rd grade.

Be prepared, the Disney backpacks may reappear when you least expect it. My oldest DD15 has a Hello Kitty backpack. Amongst her friends there is a Cookie Monster, Elmo, Tinkerbell, P&F, and a Ni Hao Kailan (sp?). High schoolers are really loving their characters. You still have the scoffers, but not many.

My DD had a princess backpack in K, Littlest Pet Shop in 1st, started 2nd with Barbie but it fell apart about halfway through the year, so she switched to Rapunzel (then a Girl Scouts duffel bag she won from cookie sales ended out the year...) This year (3rd), I bought her the Brave backpack from the Disney Store and had her name embroidered on it.

I'll second what someone else said about high schoolers having character bags. Plenty where I teach have them, and several have tiny character backpacks that can't hold much more than a notebook and a few other supplies. What I find odd is that the guys tend to carry girly characters like Dora in bright pink.

I got tired of character backpacks falling apart before Christmas break w/ oldest dd so when oldest dd & youngest dd started 2nd & kindergarten I bought them Landsend backpacks. My youngest dd was made fun of on the bus in the 2nd grade for wearing a tye die princess jacket from WDW by a 5th grader. She avoided wearing it after that. I was upset that the bus driver did not intervene and the assistant principal "looked" into it.

Ok so from what I gather it's pretty much half and half. It sounds like the ones that still carried them pretty much have the attitude my dd has of "I still like it, and that's that" I only hope she stays that way. I know it only takes one negative word from someone she really looks up to to possibly change that. Thank you all for the input. I have also noticed with the older kids these days, pretty much anything goes and they are reverting back to the things they (or we!) enjoyed in our younger years.

I guess I'll squeeze all I can out of this year in case she's over princesses by next year.

That is just terrible. I'm sorry for your dd that that happened. Some kids are just so heartless and I know it's just because they're lacking something in their own lives, which just makes it that much more sad.

I have two boys, ages 5 & 7. They both still enjoy character bookbags and lunch kits. I think kids grow up way to fast these days and often, I think parents stop allowing kids to be kids far too early. Kudos to you for supporting your daughters choice!!

By first grade my kids wanted plain backpacks but were ok with decorated lunch boxes.

by third grade, they wanted plain everything.
