When did/will you start shopping for baby?

I would say that if you see something that is a really good deal, jump on it. I didn't buy any big things for the baby (furniture etc) until I was closer to 6 or 7 months. I did have a shower and got a lot of stuff then, but I was always picking up gender neutral clothes when they were deeply discounted. I'd also pick up toiletries like lotions and baby wash but I didn't get diapers until after he was born. I got 2 diaper cakes for shower gifts, and other packages of diapers, and then got sent home from the hospital with loads of them too that I didn't have to buy any for a while. My DS was into size 1's pretty quickly too.
The BRU offer was really tempting! We were thinking of getting (another) new umbrella stroller but I was able to convince my DH that we didn't need it.
If you have a club store like BJs or Sam's Club, a lot of times they have decent prices on things; we bought our car seats at BJs and I think the ones we got were about $60 or $70 more at BRU.

I also live in the northeast and dont expect a shower for #2...I will put a few things on a registry if we need them because I think some people will still give us baby gifts, but nothing like the first time around!

I know at work we usually do a smaller collection for a target or BRU gift card for the second + kiddo...whereas the first, we usually have a shower ordeal!

I never had a shower for my first but did for my second. If the children are different genders or the age gap is more than a few years, I don't see the problem with second or more showers or "sprinkles" :confused3

First, congrats :cloud9: on the bambino!

Second, I agree with everyone to wait until after your 20 week ultrasound. In my second pregnancy at our 12 week u/s the tech said she thought our baby was a boy. Luckily, we kept that info. to ourselves because at our 20 week u/s we found out the baby was a girl! The second tech was very upset that the first tech even speculated the sex at that stage to us.

Either way congrats again and best wishes for a happy, healthy pregnancy!

i don't start for real unless i find a really good sale before 12 weeks minimum or if you've seen a good healthy heartbeat then at 10 i suppose. i would just be so afraid of losing it and then having bought the stuff and having to keep or return it so the general rule is 2nd trimester... also i highly recomend the 3d elective ultrasound you can do later in the pregnancy it is amazing and they do a video of it so you can show your child later what she/he looked like in your tummy and as a bonus get a THIS IS DEFINATELY a girl/boy.

Wow, I just realized that I am over 12 weeks with #2 and have not even thought about buying anything. With DD I had my registry completed by now and had several outfits hanging in the closet. A lot of DDs stuff is gender neutral though and I don't plan on leaving the house too much initially so even if this one is a boy, it can be in pink and not be too scarred. We will need a new crib and mattress, if this one is like DD and refuses to sleep in the brand new :headache: pack n play but we'll probably get that sometime over the summer, after we have moved the kids bedrooms around a bit.

OK so for the most part I'm going to hold off, it looks like most everything is so gender specific now anyway. In the meantime, what can I stock up on other than diapers/wipes? I'm going to need new bottles, but the brand I like are either pink or blue, so I'm going to wait on that. I looked at our exersaucer and it's a mess, we'll just get another, that thing went through he** and back, she wouldn't sit in the highchair, so she got fed in the exersaucer, lol. I saved all the toys from it, they're not in bad shape since I bought extras, kept them clean and swapped them out. There's a super cute girl tea party one, but I have to hold out for that one. I don't think we'll get a new swing, I might make a new cover for it, the highchair is hardly used, and is plaid (yuck, but it was cheap.) A boy won't die from using a brown and pink pack and play.. we hardly used it, so it's nearly new. I'm not going to bother with another Diaper Genie, a trashpail outside works just as well. Most of DD's white onesies are pristine because the yucky ones I just tossed when they got too dirty. DD wasn't big on paci's so I'm hoping to be able to not go the paci route this time, too. I'd stock up on formula, but you never know if the bun bun is going to have allergies or sensitivities.

Geez... I guess I don't really need that much. Sucks because I want to shop! Shopping is my bonding, lol. We'll need a double stroller, but I have to save a little for that one, they're expensive.

DD hated the pack and play! THey have these new pack and plays with this "newborn napper" in it, they look really nice and comfy. I wish I could just buy the newborn napper separately, that would be ideal. Of course, this baby will probably hate it, just on principle!

ITA on the clothes thing... I don't think a boy will be scarred for life just because he wore some of DD's (adorable) little jammies. I don't think I'd take him out in girls clothes, but in the house, definitely.

Yeah I've been getting ultrasounds weekly from 5-11 weeks, the hb is pretty strong, all above 160. I was afraid for a long while, but I'm starting to get more confident about it. I have been trying to convince DH of the 3D u/s this time. With DD we had ultrasounds *all* the time because of a problem I had, and she was definitely most certainly a not shy girl. She's still a fan of running around nekkie, LOL.

Thank you!!

Yeah, I was just told it might be a "boy part" but then I ended up looking it online... they all seem to have a little 'nub' down there at 11 weeks. It doesn't matter which gender (well, I have a little bit of a preference, but I'm keeping that mum) but when I find out, I want to know for sure!

I wouldn't stock up on bottles - I've heard too many stories about parents "trying" different bottles for their babies until they found one that would work!

We did that with DD... but it was more of an 'annoyance' thing with me, I hated the leaky Playtex Vent Aire and the darned Avent, I still have no idea why they're so popular. Luckily DD didn't care what she sucked on, as long as she got a full belly!

I'm 20 weeks and so far we have bought nothing. This is my first. I was hoping to find out the sex at the 20 week ultrasound and then start shopping, but the baby had another idea. It wouldn't cooperate so...now we probably need to start preparing, which is really hard to do no knowning the gender.

Unless you find some pretty good sales, I would say wait until after you have a shower, if you are going to have one. Its less expensive that way. :) Also, I wouldn't start buying gender stuff just yet. Seeing boy parts at 11 is very slim. Nothing has descended yet at that stage and it is very hard to tell that early. You are safer if you wait until your 20 week u/s to be for sure. We're due in June with #4 and we're having our first boy, so its been fun to shop!

Bottles were easy for me to find (Avent) since DD#1 quit nursing at 11 months but due to growth issues, stayed on liquid nutrition that we had to "log". Thankfully she took those bottles. My nightmares are finding a sippy that DD #2 will take :sad2: Costly trial and error!

I'm from the north east, and we've (general circle of people I know) always had showers for each.

LOL we're just not having a shower because our families suck.. haha. I think other women around here get showers for every kid.

I started shoping for my 1st born around your time... I started looking at cribs, swings, onesies, I was basicaly running a muck at Babies R Us... I registered once but as soon as I found out the sex I deleted everything and started new!!!

Well, here in NJ, the only person I've ever met who has had more than one shower is me! :lmao: My twins were very unexpected (oops x 2), and I think my friends felt sorry for me. It was very casual - lots of matching outfits and diapers, no big ticket items.
