Its a while since I visited the site so I'm a bit out of the loop.

When did the DD Virgin check in close and why?

Hi Cheryl,
DD check-in closed immediately after Sept 11. last year.
There have been various rumours about it re-opening and there is no doubt Virgin would like it back because it was so popular but the decision rests with U.S. security and you can understand their concern as the luggage is sitting around for a long time before even going thru security checks.
This might sound a bit daft to you as an innocent tourist but you have to remember that it isn't folks like you they are worried about.
Let's hope they get something sorted so we have it back soon,
