When did single hotel rooms stop working for your family?

There are 6 of us so we can’t do one room unless it is a suite. That said, All Star Music family suites are affordable and provide 2 bathrooms. Sold!

My kids are now 18 and almost 16, both boys. They have refused to share a bed for probably the last 10 years, so we used an air mattress in a moderate resort room until our 2016 trip. We had plenty of sleeping room, but lack of privacy and just feeling like we were all crammed in with nowhere to go got really old that trip. In 2018, we rented a 3-bedroom condo at Windsor Palms and it was perfect. Plenty of room to spread out and a bedroom for each boy and one for DH and me.

Growing up, we migrated (parents and sister) from studio to one bedroom. The hotel room was typically two queens with a pull out mattress from a couch or a roll away bed. This was what we did until I moved out at 22. We never booked two rooms.

We are a family of four. DD is 24 and DS is 22 and we've always done one room at Disney except for our trip with DD's boyfriend. That trip we stayed at SSR in a 2 bedroom villa. We've managed by staying in the Deluxe resorts and have been lucky to get a roll away or a day bed for more bed spaces. We can usually manage a week in close proximity but wouldn't want a longer stay that way. All that said, our next stay we have 2 rooms at CSR!

Can manage for a few days in single room, but longer we need space. We have a timeshare so we usually do a split stay with a few days on property, rest off in 2 bed condo, if more than 2 or 3 of us. Our upcoming June Universal trip I have us in Cabana bay suite for a few days before cruise. One cabin (balcony) for the cruise though-so we will see how that works wit 2 adults, 2 kids.

With just the 4 of us, I cannot imagine needing more than 1 room. I think it would be sad if we could not handle being together for a week or 2 and we have not felt cramped either. We actually enjoy the closeness and never need "our own space" and we have not had any issues with just one bathroom, especially the rooms that have the sink area outside of the shower/toilet area. Our next stay is at POP.

We have always needed three beds for our family of four. DD15 is a horrible kicker, and we all refuse to sleep with her. We were in Germany a few years ago, and the hotel gave us the wrong room, so DD and DS (now 17) had to share a sofa bed. DS ended up sleeping on the cold floor it was so bad!

In 2011, when the kids were 7 and 9, we stayed in a bunk bed room at Wilderness Lodge. It was fine, but that we trip we decided that DVC was going to work best for us. Now we typically stay in one bedrooms that have a sofa bed and sleeper chair or Murphy bed (DD is only 5’2”).

On non-Disney trips we almost always stay at Springhill Suites or similar that have 2 beds and a sofa bed. Or we rent through VRBO or homeaway for a condo/house. We are all much happier when we have our own space!

We have a son and daughter 2 years apart, we used to stay in one room with bunk beds in WL when they were kids, but when they were teens we stayed in a suite at Art of Animation (for less money I’m pretty sure). The separate bedroom for us, bed for each of them, and second bathroom were invaluable. They are now young adults and we are going to stay in a Lion King suite again.

I think we’ll always be fine in a single room. We are a family of four who often stays at Pop for up to two weeks at a time and we’re not bothered by lack of space.

Once the kids are adults and they want to continue travelling with us, they might opt to pay for a separate room if they wish to. I’ll leave that up to them. But I won’t be offended if they want to get away from us. Lol.

#momof6
So stayed in 1 room when had 4 and pregnant with #5 (as #4 slept in a pack and play)
Once #5 arrived - have had 2 rooms.
Though this next time, we are trying a suite so we know we will all be together. Mom and dad in bedroom. Girls in other bedroom. The boys (they are #5&6) in the living room on the pullout.

Well, as a solo most of the time, I haven’t had an issue with one room, but sometimes I just want more space or in room laundry or something like that and I will splurge on a larger room. Sometimes my sister and BIL will go with me, and we all share one room for the night or two we are there together. The longest the three of us shared a room was the week after Hurricane Irma when they couldn’t go back home yet. The three of us were in a new Pop room and managed just fine.

I totally get kids not wanting to share a bed though. My sister and I hated sharing beds and as soon as I was old enough to earn money and contribute to the vacation funds I made sure there were three sleeping surfaces.

Growing up, my parents would take us to Disney every summer and get two separate rooms, starting when I was maybe 10 and my brother 13. They spent a LOT of time at the resort though, so it was more important for them than us probably Haha.

For my family, our kids are 3 and 5 now. If things go well, maybe we can buy some resale dvc points in 3-4 years to stay at 1 or 2 bedrooms. If not, we may just stay offsite at a villa and probably be just as happy lol

For us (family of 5) it totally depends on how long and what type of trip it is. We tend to be pretty all-or-nothing - either completely relaxing somewhere, or non stop on-the-go! In the first case (ie the beach) we need extra space. In the second case (Disney!) we’re fine crashing in one room at the end of the busy day.

I took my mom and the 3 kids to Chicago this summer and even then did just 1 room, we walked ourselves to death and spent little time there. The key was having more than 1 sink area (and an actual shower curtain vs glass doors) so 1 or 2 could be dressing while another showered.

A single room has never worked for us. In 2006 when my daughter was 5 I took on what I thought was a once and done trip to WDW. To be fair I got an adjoining room for her mother and a great aunt. We are now jokingly planning our 6th and done trip but it hurts more now. I am still paying for 2 rooms but baby girls tastes have changed from POR to The Poly in 12 years.

We have a daughter and a son. Ever since they were toddlers, while on vacation I would share a bed with our daughter and my husband with our son. If we had two boys or two girls, then this arrangement wouldn't work, now that they are in their tween/teen years.

We have 2 girls who are now 17&18. We always get one room. The girls take one bed and we take the other. On the cruise it is just us 3 girls(daddy does not cruise) and no on wants the top bunk so we get the deluxe family room with the murphy bed. I get the queen, one gets the couch bed, and the third gets the murphy. If I was made of money then I would get them their own room. But I rather go more often then waste the money on an extra room just to sleep in.
