I know you can make a room only reservation based on last years average rate, but I couldn't remember when you can make package reservations. My DH said he wanted to wait another year before we go back, but my kiddos and I have the Disney Fever and I thought we might try to convince him to go again. My DH has a blast once he gets there, so I know that when we get closer to spring, he will be okay with it. We are giving some thought to doing a 4 or 5 day cruise with Carnival. We might be able to squeeze in a few nights at WDW around the cruise dates....make our own land/sea package.

Hi! Hope you are off to a great Monday! You can actually begin booking vacation packages for 2010 now! I am a Disney travel agent, and am happy to pass this information to you. Disney now lets you book packages instead of room only holds. What happens is, once you've chosen your dates and resort, you can deposit on a non-guaranteed rate package to hold your room. Then, when package pricing is announced, you simply convert your reservation into the package that fits your needs. The deposit is only $200, and the balance is not due until 55 days prior to your arrival. Additionally, that deposit is refundable without penalty if you need to cancel and do so before the last minute. I suggest to everyone that a travel agent is a huge help when booking Disney. Most people are scared that they will have to pay more, but the service is free. Disney and other suppliers offer travel agents incentives for booking their packages. You stand a better chance of knowing about package discounts and promotions by using an agent. For what it's worth, I hope you can convince him to go! Let me know if you need help with anything else!

I know it used to be August in the past, but I just called about this today to see if it had changed (we're thinking about May 2010) & was told that they can actually book a basic package now with just the room (different from a room-only).. and you have the ability to add dining and tickets on later.

That's true, it used to be in August. You also used to have to book the room only, then cancel, start over and re-book the package. Now, you reserve the basic package and refine the package choice you want later after product announcements have been made. Pretty cool for me as a Disney travel agent, because the booking and cancelling to rebook is a risk, since technically for a few moments you have your rooms on the open market again. It's really rough when a great package gets announced, like the free dining they did this year. :wizard:

I hadnt heard about the change but its good for guests, not good for the booking CM's because they used to get credit for the new bookings. And there is ZERO risk of losing a room because you had to cancel and rebook. The new package will be made before the room only is cancelled.
