When Can I Borrow From '05 points?

Hi there,

I am a new DVC member, passed ROFR 2 weeks ago and expect to close any day now (BWV 250 pts).

I guess I could ask MS this question, but these boards are so great I wanted to try here first. My "use year" is December. The points have all been used for 2004.

My question is this--when can I start to borrow from the '05 points? Do I have to wait for the month my use year begins or can I borrow any time during the current use year for the next use year?

I imagine this question has been asked by many other newbies to DVC, hopefully someone will be patient enough to explain this to me.

You will be able to borrow your 2005 points for a 2004 vacation as soon as you close.

Everything is based on the date of your vacation and what will be effect as of that day. If the points are available on that day, then you can book. This is assuming that you will be within the 7/11 month booking window for that vacation.

I have already borrowed points from my 2006 use year to book an 2005 II exchange. Eventually I hope to be caught back up and not borrow - NOT.

When I bought in the seller had used all the points for '04 already. I had already rented points for a 9/04 and 1/05 trip (didn't realize when I rented for 5/04 that I would love it so much and have to buy in myself), so I didn't mind not having any '94 points with the contract--I did not have to pay maintenance for this year and I got a good price per point.

So yes, all the '04 points are gone, I'd like to know when I can borrow from '05 if my use year is December. I may want to upgrade one of my exisiting ressies with the points. Or maybe take another trip to The World!

Thanks Robin, I thought so but I wasn't sure, this clears it up just fine for me.

I too can see that I may be "behind" constantly but since I will be 91 in 2045 I don't think I have to worry too much, LOL!

I think you may have a few points mixed up. Let me clarify a point for you. You can only use point that are for the current year - 2004. 2003 points may have been banked into 2004 and be available that way. Or you can borrow points from next year - 2005

1994, 1995, 1996, etc will not be usuable even if they were never used. They would be lost forever.

Thanks, I believe I understood that. I just wasn't sure if I could borrow from '05 if my '04 use year hadn't arrived yet. Sorry for the wrong dates in the OP, and you're right about the coffee Pam--I'll go edit the OP so I seem less stupid now, LOL!

Idratherbeinwdw, another thing that you might be confused about is when your lease on BWV points expire. All DVC I points expire in 2042, not 2045 like you posted. So, in fact, you'll be a spry 88 at that time, and may need to add-on to catch up!

Thanks LuronTravel. I kinda knew I was off by a couple of years but I was too lazy to look it up, LOL. And wouldn't it be great if we're all still going to the happiest place on earth until we are in our upper 80's and beyond?

OK... to make sure that I understand things correctly... The OP is buying 250 pts with a December UY. All of the 2004 points have already been used by the previous owner.

With a UY of December... he would normally receive his 250 points on December 1st.

Here is what he has available for reservations:

Today - Nov '04: No points... because all of the 2003 UY points have been used. No ability to borrow '04 points because they have been used

Dec '04 - Nov'05: No 2004 points awarded in December'04, because they have already been spent... but he can borrow any/all of his 250 2005 points.

Dec'05 - Dec'06: December'05 will be the first time he gets any points put into his account... those will be his 2005 points. He will also be able to borrow '06 points if he choses. So he could make a reservation for 500 points during this perios

Dec'06 - Dec'07: This will be the first opportunity to use 3 years worth of points (750).... he can bank his '05 points, use his'06 points, and borrow his '07 points.

Do I have it right?

If all 2004 points are gone you won't be able to make a reservation for a stay until December 2004. Any stays between December 2004 and December 2005 will require borrowing 2005 points. You can make a reservation anytime you have the points available either current or to borrow and you are within the 7/11 month reservation window depending on the resort Hope this helps.

To clarify (for me anyway), you can make a december 1, 2004 reservation at ant DVC using your 2005 points right now since we're within the 7 month window.

Understood. Thanks everyone for the very helpful answers.

It took a while but I think I can put what everyone told me into a nutshell:

I CAN'T use the points to book September through December 1st of this year, I CAN make ressies (as soon as MS gets me in the system) using borrowed 2005 points for December 1, 2005 and afterwards, 7 months out for non home, 11 months for BWV.

And by the way I have to tell you that midway today my contract came through!! I have to send the final payment, and then I'm in! So it won't be long before I can make those scenarios you all helped me with a reality, woohoo!! Thanks again!!

Congratulations....you're almost there! It's been suggested that it helps to map things out so you can see what you're doing. It can get especially confusing having a Use Year that begins at the end of the calendar year.

December 2003 Points -- Good for December 1, 2003-Nov. 30, 2004 My understanding is that these have all been used.

December 2004 Points -- Good for December 1, 2004-Nov. 30, 2005

December 2005 Points -- Good December 1, 2005-Nov. 30, 2006


To make a reservation prior to December 1, 2004 -- you will need to borrow points from the December 2004 points. A trip starting December 1, could use the December 2004 points.

The wording on your original post has me questioning one thing that you may need to clarify. When they say "no points remain for 2004", they could mean that they have already borrowed and used the points that are due December 2004. In that case, you would have to borrow from December 2005 to take a December 2004 trip and you would have no way to take a trip prior to December 2004.

Thanks for the good wishes on my resale! And yes, the last line of your post is correct. The points WERE all borrowed for 2004 and I won't be able to borrow any from '05 until this Dec 1.

I had already booked my September '04 and January '05 with rented points, not knowing I'd fall in love with BWV and the whole DVC thing and end up buying in. So since those trips were already taken care of it was fine with me not to have any points for immediate use, and of course I didn't have to pay '04 maintenance on my resale since all the points for 2004 were used by the seller. Got a pretty decent price on the points too, and exactly the number I wanted, so I'm happy with the deal.

It will be exciting to make my first ressie on my own--planning to call in November and use the 11 month window for an October 2005 trip to BWV. (yes, using points borrowed from '05, LOL)
