When are schools out....

in S CAL for 2005? I haven't been to DL since my 5th trip there which was in 1981 (I was -3 years old-ha!). I am eagerly planning a HS graduation trip for our 3rd child. DS8 and DS12 will join DH and I. We will arrive June 4th for two weeks and I am wondering if the week of June 6th will be extremely crowded at DL. Can't wait to devour this board for advice. And what about weather?

When school gets out varies greatly--most traditional-year schools end somewhere in mid-June, though a lot of districts (including Anaheim) are on a year-round schedule, meaning at any given time (other than Thanksgiving and winter breaks because they all go off for those) a third of the students are off-track (meaning not in school). Many schools do a modified year-round and may be off at the end of May and go back in August. Year-round school is very common in So. Cal. My neice is on modified year-round, got off in early June (a week before most traditional-year schools) and goes back in a week and a half. But she gets a lot of time off during the school year.

Weather in June can be really hot or not so hot with overcast skies (we call it June Gloom). My suggestion would be to check the weather often as your trip gets closer and pack a variety of shorts and long pants. Don't forget to bring sweatshirts, because once the sun goes down it will get chilly, regardless of how hot it was during the day.

You have a good chance of lower crowds that week. My daughter get's out June 3rd (her Kindergarten class) but the rest of her school doesn't get out until the end of the next week. The track schools like Anaheim school district have 1 track off and 3 tracks on almost all the time, so there will always be kids off from that district. I'm trying to think when they started summer hours this year, I think on Non Grad night nights they were open a bit later, and on grad night nights they closed at regular time. I don't thing summer hours started till around mid June. You'd think since this was only a few months ago, I would remember when Howard started working till 2am, but due to lack of sleep of being woke up every night in the middle of the night, I can't remember. All I know is I love when September rolls around and I can start sleeping better.

My DD17 gets out of High School the second week of June, 2005. Therefore, your dates should be great

Be aware of two things when going in early June. Many Elementry school have end of the year field trips to Disneyland which makes the park pretty crowded with kids, good new with this is that they usually leave by 5pm and the evening is less crowded. Secondly, the park will close early on select days for Grad Night Celebrations, where graduating High School Seniors have an all night party.
