when does disney assign a room to you? is it b4 you get there or at checkin time
?:confused3

I worked at CBR (17 years ago:eek: ). Some rooms were assigned the day before, but most were assigned by the front desk agent at check-in. The ressies were given to the resorts about 5 days before arrival date.

If you have a special request, have whomever you booked with note your request on your ressie. I would then call the resort directly the day before to see if they can assign you a room ahead of time.

This was 17 years ago so if things have changed........someone please chime in.

My room was assigned on check-in. In December when I stayed at the Poly, I'd requested a first floor lagoon view room in the Tahiti building. The front-desk CM informed me that that building was completely full and offered me a choice between two other buildings. She recommended 1st floor Tuvalu and I accepted that.

Please note that I checked in around 11:30am so that may have had something to do with it.

Unless they are doing something that all the other hotels don't do, the rooms are assigned at check-in. When housekeeping has cleared a room as clean/vacant in the system, it is eligible to be one of the rooms that pops up on the screen for the desk clerk to use. If there aren't any clean/vacant rooms, they can grab up a dirty/vacant, make you a key and send you on your way. :)

Some folks get assigned before others (and in many hotels, VIP and repeat guests are pre-keyed, so they don't have to wait through all that at check-in), but not a most people.

Since everyone around here says the rooms are assigned a week or more out, I've watched the clerks check me in. My room wasn't pre-assigned. :)

But, I don't make special requests, either.

If you are not happy with your room, can you changed when a better one becomes available?
If your room is unclean or there is water pouring in or something, I'm sure Disney would be happy to move you.

If you would just rather be in another building/section, I doubt it. If they told you at check-in that it wasn't available, it probably isn't. But I don't know. Maybe they'll move people who complain - that would be very Disney-like.

Other than that, it's a hotel/motel. It's a room. There isn't a whole lot to be happy or unhappy about, I don't think.

No, I wasn't talking about dirty or leaky rooms; rather, I was thinking about locations within the resort. We are staying at a deluxe (with the deluxe pricetag:goodvibes ) and are planning to spend more time at the resort than we have in the past. So, for the first time, it feels more than just a room--it feels like a resort/home. We would like to be close to certain amenities.

Leaving tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I don't think it can hurt to ask nicely if you get to your room and don't like it. I have heard of plenty of people who have done that. Especially when you are paying a huge price tag per night ;)

It always seems to me that when we check in our room has already been pre-assigned a day or two before. I don't think the desk CM just goes into an inventory of rooms and assigns it right then.

I'm a bit concerned about room assignment because we will be arriving at 10:30 or 11 o'clock at night. (Had to take a late flight so the kids could go to school the full day.) The last time we checked in that late at a hotel-this was NON-Disney, they said that in spite of our reservation that had been held on a credit card for months, they had given away all of the rooms of the size we reserved. We were able to move into the right room the next day, and we got a large discount, but it can happen. When it does, one would HOPE for an upgrade, rather than a downgrade, but that is not what happened to us.

For me, it seems to be assigned at check in. I like to ask "what do you have availale" and they can show me maps of the resort and the like so I can decide where I like best. Kind of nice, and I have been willing to wait for a room with a better location if available :)

It varies by resort and time of year. Yes, sometimes the rooms are pre-assigned. But most times that we've checked in lately the room is assigned by the CM at checkin. We go to WDW about 5 or 6 times a year (Florida residents & AP passholders).

Yes, you can ask to be moved if you haven't gotten the room you really wanted. We've done it twice this year. Be forwarned, though, that you have to pack up, check out, check back in, and have your luggage moved. It's a bit of a hassle unless you have a really good reason to move and a long stay ahead of you.

1) Busy times
. . . as many rooms as possible are assigned 2-4 days ahead of check-in
2) Slower times
. . . many rooms assigned prior to check-in
. . . some rooms open for assignment at check-in
3) DVC rooms (on points)
. . . some assigned 2-4 days ahead of check-in
. . . many rooms are open for "ready room" assignment at check-in

NOTE: There used to be a lot of "slower times" rooms. However, within increased bookings, the resorts are more full, so most rooms are now assigned prior to check-in.

What are the chances of a solo traveller being assigned a king room at the values, specifically Pop (since paying for a king at the values is not an option)?

We have learned to do this also after a bad experience at the AKL one Spring Break. We checked in early (8:00 am) and went off to the parks, expecting that our early check-in would guarantee a good room. Ha! Ha! After 7 hours in the heat and crowds we came back to the Lodge and were shown to our savannah room view of large metal doors and ac units. We ended up waiting another 2 hours for a 'smoking optional' room with another bad view.

Advice: Ask what you are waiting for!
