The truth is that sometimes our good life companions are BAAAAD travel companions.
Sadly my best vacations have been without my dh.
The longer I am married, the happier I am to vacation without my dh. He gets anxious about EVERYTHING when we travel and every minute has to be occupied doing something. And heaven forbid, a plan doesn't work out and you just have to chill for a while! "We're wasting time, we're wasting money! ARRGHHHHH!" And even if the entire trip has gone perfectly, he gets all.... anxious on the last day as if since something bad did not happen, he has to make it happen (comes from growing up with his mother).
I am, therefore, both looking forward to and anxious about our first trip to Europe next year. My dd has already said something like, "What is he going to find to be unhappy about on THAT trip?" I will soon be having what will no doubt be a most unpleasant conversation with him about his behavior. I am sure he will go all martyr on me, "Well, then I'll just stay home." And I'll have to fight the urge to tell him, "Fine. Stay home."
I wish I could videotape him so that I could playback his behavior and he could SEE how he acts sometimes.
