My mom will need to use a wheelchair b/c she can't walk for long periods of time. Do you get those at the resort or at the parks? Anyone have an idea of the daily rental fee? I assume it is first come, first served -- so we need to get one early in the morning, correct?

You can sometimes get a wheelchair at the hotels, free of charge. Some people have have reported having a $250 hold put on their credit card until the wheelchair is returned (as a deposit). The wheelchairs available at the resorts are first come, first served and what is available may not be what you need -like an extra wide may be all there is at that time.
You can also rent wheelchairs by the day at the parks. Here's a link to the DIS page about wheelchair information for the parks.

It is less expensive to rent by the week from one of the local off site vendors.
Here are the ones that DIS posters have reported they used:

SueM and other people on the DISabilities board were very helpful to me in planning a few weeks ago when my DH injured himself 3 days before we left on our trip. We rented a scooter from Walker Mobility for a week, just about $200 for that. It was such a lifesaver and the company was great too, we had no problems with the service. They delivered the scooter to our first hotel (ASMo) and picked it up from CBR. I can't tell you how many people asked us about renting one in the parks and even at the hotels. Also CBR bell services was so helpful. They came and picked the scooter up at our room (CBR is very spread out and we weren't close to the Custom House) and took it back to their area for Walker to pick up the day we were leaving.

Between Disney, Walker, and the kind people on these boards with their helpful advice - it really saved our vacation.

Good luck and have a great time.

thanks for the help -- I'll check out the companies and sites you've both given me

Hi,

Back in 1997 I broke a bone in my left foot a week before our Disney trip. We were booked at CBR. When we checked in we asked about a wheelchair and they brought one out for us. No charge no deposit. This was five years ago so maybe someone else might have a more recent experience that they could share with you.

You did not mention what resort you are staying at so I am assuming it is a Disney resort.

Hope you have a good trip.

The information about the deposit to get a wheelchair at a WDW resort was posted about 2 weeks ago, but it has been posted before. Someone else who posted about the same time just got a wheelchair at the resort - no deposit.
The "you get whatever they have at the resort" part has been reported pretty consistently. If you need a regualr size wheelchair and all they have is an extra-wide, that's what you are lent.
