Wheelchair question

I know that you can rent motorized scooters for use in the parks but does anyone know if you can arrange to have a collapsable wheelchair at your resort to use for the entire length of your stay? My FIL gets very tired when walking a lot and we thought having a wheelchair for him would make it a lot easier on him but we would rather not have to bring it on the plane. I figured if it were collapsable then we could get it on and off of the buses easily. Has anyone done this before and if so who do I contact?

Most offsite places that rent scooters will also rent standard wheelchairs. Scroll down in this FAQ thread on the disABILITIES Board

A limited number of complementary wheelchairs are also available for use at the front desk of your resort. A deposit is required. I do not know if the ones from the resort collapse, though. You may want to call the resort front desk directly. They are on a first come basis.

WDW busses are equipped with ramps or lifts, so even loading someone in an uncollapsed wheelchair or scooter is pretty easy.

Each resort has a limited number that are first come first serve. You can just ask for one when you check in. There is no charge but a credit card # is taken as a deposit.

But you never know what sizes might be there. So many on the disAbilities forum suggest renting one from an outside vendor. There's lots of info here:

Just saw Chuck's post. The ones we borrowed from WDW over the years were collapsible. Traditional hospital type wheelchairs.

One suggestion would be to wait and see if your resort has a complementary chair available, and if it meets your needs. You can always call a supplier from the resort (jot down some phone numbers) and rent one, they will usually deliver either that afternoon or the following day.

Not sure if the link will work but we bought one of these on ebay for my mom and it worked great! We appreciated having it for use in the airport as well as while we were at Disney. Also, it was much more comfortable than the chairs at the parts. After Pirates of the Carribean, you use a free park chair to get the person back to where the personal wheel chairs are parked. That short ride in the free wheelchair had mom complaining about how hard and uncomfortable it was compared to "her" wheelchair.

Now we have the chair for use at home (art shows in the park, etc.) AND we are using it again for WDW for mom in December.
