My parents are leaving for a trip soon and they have a connecting flight. My father will need wheelchair assistance to get from one gate to the other. What is the best way to arrange this? Is is something that should be arranged ahead of time or just tell the flight attendant? I appreciate your expertise.

From someone who gets a wheel chair at the airport let me tell you how it works. When you check in at the airport be sure to tell the front desk person (if you havnt checked in online) that you need a skycap to wheel you down to the gate. If you do not need a wheel chair to the gate then you can just tell them at the gate that you would like a wheel chair when you arrive. They will arrange this for you.

As an alternate route you can call the airline and add this on. I always select wheel chair needed when I book the ticket so its already in the system when I fly (which most everyone at the airport knows me for Allegiant in Greensboro lol).

For ones line US Air etc its all the same, just either call them if you already have the ticket, select wheel chair needed when booking or just tell them at the check in counter/gate.

They will work with you and I have never had an issue. I would suggest have tip money ready as one of their staff must load/unload (wheel you down the ramp to the plain) if you need that assistance. If its just to/from the gate you can usually do it yourself if you are able and save the tip.

Hope that helps!

I always make sure it is noted on my reservation in advance and then remind people at the airport when I check in, when I board the plane (the FA) and when it is time to get off. The FA's will call ahead to remind the airport of how many need assistance.

I have had hit or miss service depending on the airport. I have to have a wc to the door of the plane and then to get off the plane. If this is the case do not get off the plane until one comes. I have had FA's try to convince me to get off and wait at the gate (not an option for me by the way) because they need to turn the plane around. But once you get off the plane no one has any reason to try to get anyone there to assist you and you could be stuck at the gate. As long as you are on their plane they can't do anything else until a wc arrives and they are really motivated to get one there. ;)

And I do make sure I have small bills to tip.
