Has anyone rented a wheelchair accessible home in Disney Area? I am now paraplegic from MS and would really enjoy taking a trip back to Orlando and I think the best way to go would be this route. I am in need of hoyer lift so DH's back can rest, so a home would be better than hotel. I have gone through many of Sues notes and pictures of rooms from Bill. I am having no luck on finding accessible properties(homes). Any tips or ideas would be very helpful as this will be the first trip DH and myself take since 05(when I became paraplegic).

Thanks!

eternaldisneyfan's family rented a wheelchair accessible home on their trip to WDW. There is a link to her trip report in post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread. It's a long thread (she's a good writer with a lot of fans who posted on her trip report). She had a lot of pictures, including some good ones of the home they rented. I know she had pictures of each bedroom and the pool. I think she had pictures of each room.
I think she had enough information in the report that you could figure out how they rented it; otherwise, you could PM or email her.

Good luck:goodvibes

Thanks Sue!

I cannot figure out how to access her posts!:confused3
OK
Here's a direct link to her trip report thread.

If you loose it, go to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. A link to her trip report is in post #3 of that thread, towards the end of that thread, under Wheelchairs. It is titled "eternaldisneyfan's family trip to WDW (power wheelchair)"

The first few pages of her trip report are about the planning and the actual drive. She has a TABLE OF CONTENTS in her first post. I think that the house information and pictures are under this part We are here, we are here, we are here!!- Page 7, Post #101

Hope this works for you

I have seen an accessible home offered by one of the Disney area vacation home companies. I know it has a Hoyer lift into the pool (for an extra fee, which is terrible IMO! Not sure if these privately-owned, but company-run, homes fall under the ADA or not, but if they do, that is also against the law because non-disabled ppl aren't charged a fee to use the pool), not sure if it has one in a bedroom or not.

I think the company was All Stars or something - I got the link off the PassPorter Web site.

Hello! The home I rent is fully handicapped accessible. It even has a lift for the pool. The owner herself is a quadraplegic so she understands the needs.
I found her through A1 Vacations. Here is the website http://www.a1vacations.com/rental-home/p215977#unitAvailability . I have some pictures if you'd like to see them. Good luck!!

Thank-you for the awesome info:hug: Can you fit a hoyer lift inder the bed?

Betty

Ya know I really don't know. I can't remember. But the woman who owns it is wonderful. She is in the UK but she does answer her email rather swiftly. I'm sure she'd be more than happy to help you!!

I hate to be a pain but, do you have pictures you can send me especially of the bathroom?

Thanks! If you cant dont worry about it.

Do you know what that website is for passporters.

No problem at all! The shower is a roll in shower and there is also a shower chair to use. I'll dig them up and post them.

Ok, here's the outside of the house:

Here's the shower area:

Here's the sink area (please excuse DH in his towel!). I wanted to show you that you can wheel your chair right under the sink:

Here's a shot of the pool and lift:

I hope these help! I had to scan them in but I think they came out ok.
Feel free to ask me anything else!!

Thanks Kim!

That is so funny that is exactly how my husband walks around to!

I hope you dont mind me asking but do you use an electric wheelchair or regular? I use an electric and I cannot transfer (stupid MS:mad: ) so I am really concerned if they will allow my chair on the "regular chair rides" without having to transfer. Have you had any bad experiences w/ this?

Do you have problems getting in and out of the pool/front door with the chair?

Thank-you for pics.

Betty

I use a regular wheelchair and can transfer with DH's help. So, often on rides I do transfer to free up the accessible ride car. I'm sure there are others on this board that can not transfer that can better help you with that question.

The front door is wide enough for my chair and the pool has large sliding glass doors as well as a regular door in the master bedroom.

DH saw that picture on here and said "You put a picture of me in my towel on the Dis Boards :scared1: " I told him that it was for educational purposes:rotfl2: He thinks I'm crazy!!:rotfl:

A lot depends on the size and shape of your power wheelchair. If it fits in the same space as a manual wheelchair, it should probably fit.

eternaldisneyfan and her sister both use power wheelchairs. In the trip report that I gave you a link to on post #4, she really gives good descriptions of what they were able to access with their power wheelchairs.
Also you might find some information in these threads where I was gathering information about ride access:
at MK

at Epcot

at the Studio

at AK
