The final contestant tonight, chose the category, what are you doing, before choosing letters and trying to solve the puzzle. She didn’t win and who could blame her? The answer was: Rummaging in the backyard. I have never heard rummaging used in this way. I rummage thru drawers but never my backyard! I call foul!

Yes! I thought maybe rummaging in the basement, but who ever heard of rummaging in the backyard? Every so often they have one of these types of final puzzles that is something people just don’t say. Feel bad for the contestant in that situation.

Rummaging seems to me as a seldom used term, but is a generic way to say 'looking around for something' in any number of possible places. Many of those final puzzles are difficult to solve and a bit of luck is needed to choose letters that help fill in the words. I don't think there was anything wrong with that puzzle and the contestant happened to not choose the right letters to be of more help. With the large prizes offered, I don't expect those puzzles to be easy.

They also seem to have a lot of new categories used during the show. I guess after all these years, they need to find other categories so they don't run out of puzzles.

I said the same thing! Who “rummages” in the backyard?! My first instinct was, sure, I rummage in the attic or basement, but the backyard?! I don’t think so. 🤔

I saw one the night before where the person had enough letters in the first word, but not enough in the second: "_cting __ir__". She got the first word but when the second word was revealed, I thought there is no way anyone would ever get it. The answer was "Acting Quirky." No one would ever choose the Q, the K, or the Y as their letter picks. Plus, how many people say "Acting Quirky?" 🤷‍♀️

I did not guess the quirky puzzle but DH got it right away. He gets almost all the puzzles immediately but won't try to get on the show. I keep telling him to try to win us a trip and some cash.

I agree with a pp that rummaging in the basement would have made more sense. I suppose you rummage outdoors if you are at a yard sale, but it is not a commonly used phrase. I read a lot of books and do not recall one where people were rummaging outside. Perhaps foraging, but not rummaging.
