I’m sure everyone is dealing with 2020 in their own way. I’ve never stopped working during this pandemic and it’s all been incredibly stressful.

I was originally supposed to go in May, but we’ve seen how that panned out. I decided to reschedule for the later half of July because it’s the time I was able to get back off work.

I tried to get off on my birthday, but I wasn’t able to get something moved. It’s since been called off, but I’ll be celebrating it anyway!

I’m driving on my own, so I’m flying by the seat of my pants. I just don’t feel safe to fly. I also don’t want to be in a Disney Bus right now, so I really want my car.

July 17 - Travel Day

I was shooting for 500 miles for my first day of travel to Dollywood, but I didn’t quite make it.

I drive my car. A lot. It’s a 2017 and I’ve already cranked up 90,000 miles on the thing. I tried my best to prepare myself for this trip. I did a road trip where I drove for 8 hours in one day just to get a feel for it. I still don’t like it, but I think I did ok.

My plan was to go to bed early and get out the door by 8 am at the very latest. That didn’t happen. I like to do a deep clean of the house before I leave. It’s my way to apologize to the cats. If I’m not there, they might as well have a clean house and new toys.

I’m normally a major overpacker. I pack everything. Now thanks to me having an SUV all to myself I packed everything that I thought I might need. Including 40 bottles of water, non-perishable groceries and a pair of dumbbells. Yes, I brought dumbbells. I’m not even sure the resp

I ended up getting on the road by noon. I was so late, that I ended up getting my AP Magic Band, so that’s a positive thing.

I ended up buying YouTube Premium for the trip. I figure that I might as well listen to stuff while I drive and it comes with YouTube Music as well.

Aside from Zune back in the day, I’ve never had another music subscription service. You know what? I quite enjoy it. It’s very similar to Zune, but it has a shuffle feature so I don’t have to try to find songs that I want to listen to.

Overall, I’m very happy with it.

By like 3pm I got bored, so I bugged my secretary about work stuff that I’m thinking about doing when I get back. I figured I’d call them so I wouldn’t forget.

Later I got a call from my alarm company because my new pet sitter set off the alarm. I showed her how to use it, but I guess she didn’t figure it out in time. She eventually figured it out.

Normally I have no problem going to a Motel 6 for a cheap bed, but what was so surprising to me is how many people were actually traveling. I saw how busy it was at the Motel 6 and went “nope” and kept looking for a Holiday Inn Express. My room was an upgrade from what I got on my phone, so I was happy.

I got to bed around 11pm about 30 minutes away from Dollywood. So not quite as far as I wanted to go, but not bad considering the really late start.

Hi! It is nice to have a current TR to follow along with. So, consider me your tag along traveler for this trip!

Your route sounds similar to mine when I travel to the Southeast. I have not been to WDW in six years but had plans for June of this year. Now that is postponed to next summer. I do travel to the Southeast usually once or twice a year to visit my siblings. And we usually stop halfway around Ashville, NC or before so we don't have to drive through the twisty mountain roads during the night with lots of big trucks.

And like you, I tend to overpack and especially when we have the room in our van. And again like you, I try to super clean my home before we leave and usually we get off late instead of early like I would like. But at least it worked out that you got your Magic Bands before you left!

July 18 - Dollywood

Dollywood is in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and they're celebrating their 35th Anniversary. It's the sister park to Silver Dollar City, which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Much like with Disneyland / Disney World, it's hard to talk about one park without talking about the other. Dollywood opened as Silver Dollar City, Tennessee before Dolly Parton came into the mix. Their respective cities share many of the same stage shows and other attractions. The parks share many of the same rides, but they also have rides that are very similar as they're built by the same manufacturers, but they're very different rides.

For example, they both have RMCs. Dollywood has Lightning Rod which is a wooden launch coaster that hold's the distinction for world's fastest at 73 mph. It's freaking nuts. Silver Dollar City has Outlaw Run which is a wooden roller coaster is 3 inversions.

I came into this wanting to give a glowing review of Dollywood. I've heard nothing but good things about the park and I love Silver Dollar City, however, that was not my experience.

Before I begin, I will say that my day started out bad, but ended really good. Overall, I had a good day, but going to Dollywood right now is not something I recommend.

Of the parks I've been to so far (my local Six Flags and Silver Dollar City), Dollywood by far did the worst in terms of social distancing, mask enforcement and sanitation. There's only so much Dollywood can do, a lot of it depends on the guests to follow the rules.

People were pretty compliant with the masks in walkways, but it wasn't perfect. What Dollywood did really well was have water washing stations everywhere and require you to sanitize your hand before going on any ride. Seriously, they would not let you on if you didn't sanitize. They were also giving out free face masks to people who lost their mask on a ride or if it broke.

The standard ques were an absolute disaster. I don't know why, but for whatever reason people weren't really adhering to the mask rule in the ques and distancing was pretty spotty. When the first ride posted a 45 minute wait, I got in and promptly left. I purchased their version of a paid Fast Pass (which was just a lanyard) which gave you access to a line skip thing. One version gave you 10 skips, while the other version gave you unlimited. Obviously I went with Unlimited and it completely saved my day.

Using their Time Saver Unlimited thing, I was able to avoid the nightmare ques entirely and ride pretty much every ride in the park that day. With the exception of a few of the little little kid rides, I rode everything and rode the rollercoasters multiple times. Rides wise, it was a pretty good day.
Food wise, it wasn't great. I saw this really cute Drive-In Burger place and got a Bacon Hamburger, Fries and a Vanilla Shake. The fries were good, the bacon was nice, the bun was good, but the patty was bland and dry. The shake was awesome! For dinner, I had a cheese pizza, which tasted like a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut, again not great. Silver Dollar City has this really good fired pizza with choose your own toppings, so coming from that it was very disappointing.

I did get a souvenir cup so I could get free drinks throughout the day. They filled the first one up with the soda of my choice and from there on they would either give me a cup of soda or a can of soda depending on the location. I kind of wish they had a wrist band or something where they would just give me my soda throughout the day and let me pick up the mug on the way out, but other than that it worked out great.

It was a very hot day, so people starting tapping out by 2pm. By 5 the park was mostly empty and by 8 pm I pretty much had the park to myself. If this was my local park, I'd go after 5:30 and have a great experience every time.

They have a pretty nice selection of rides and roller coasters. However, their Arrow Coaster, Tennessee Tornado, really hurt my knees. The first time I thought it was a fluke, rode it a second time and it hurt even worse. It's still a little sore a few days later. Some of their indoor stuff like the Dolly Parton Museum and Butterfly House was closed due to COVID. They had live entertainment, but it was all outdoors. It was pretty fun to just wonder on to shows. The layout is basically a circle, but if you don't know where you're going you can easily miss something. I had to backtrack to ride one of the roller coasters that I missed.

The park is really pretty. The landscaping is really nice and everything has a nice coat of paint. The bathrooms are new and clean and I really enjoyed all of the theming that they did.

One really nice surprise at the end of the night was the fireworks. I knew I wasn't getting any at Disney, so I was pretty surprised that they announced fireworks on the loud speakers 30 minutes before close.

Overall, I had a pretty good day. I would certainly visit Dollywood again in the future, but it's definitely not a park that I could recommend during all of this pandemic stuff due to the issues I had in the first hour.

I decided that I wanted to get back on the road, which was probably ill advised. I got an additional hour and a half done before I had to find a hotel. I ended up at an ok place, not great at all. I paid more than I felt it was worth, but I learned a valuable lesson. Never book a hotel when you're tired and never book a hotel that's not on the app.

July 18 - Travel Day

I got an early start for my day. I bought some birthday cake fudge from Dollywood, which became my breakfast. Monster, Orange Juice and Fudge is surely the breakfast of champions!

I was an hour and a half a head from where I originally wanted to be, which would end up working in my favor.

I took a break in South Carolina to go to a random Dave and Busters to play Pump it Up XX. I actually got carded when I tried to enter, so that felt good. I'm not sure what the kid thought when he saw the year on my driver's license.

I played a lot of Dance Dance Revolution as a kid, so I never really played Pump it Up. I really liked the song selection interface because you could use only your feet and not have to touch anything. I really enjoyed playing the game and wouldn't mind playing it again. After about 2 hours of that, it was back on the road.

The drive was mostly good. Very pretty scenery. Although, what's going on South Carolina? There were random spots of stop and go traffic with no rhyme or reason. It was really weird. I had planned to get to Jacksonville, Florida and drive the last two hours on my arrival day. However, I decided later in the day to just go for it. I used my Travelocity app and found a great deal on a Holiday Inn Express in Orlando about 30 minutes away from Epcot. It's a brand new hotel in some sort of an outlet mall thing. It actually ended up being the cheapest room so far ($80 including all fees). I got in around 10:30 pm.

Tomorrow it's time for Epcot!

July 19 - Part 1: Arrival

Wow... I don’t know what to say. It’s been pretty close to a perfect day. I was actually closer than I thought, so I was only 5 miles away from Old Key West.

Check in was quick and easy. They didn’t have my room ready so I wondered around the resort a bit.

It’s a very pretty resort. So after exploring it was off to Epcot.

I had about as perfect of a day that’s possible. My resort is only 5 minutes away and it took no time at all to find a parking space. The temperature check and activating my AP was painless and it was off to Test Track.

After riding a few rides, it was off to Regal Eagle for lunch. The ribs were very good and I pretty much had the place to myself.

I took the park at my own pace and I was able to ride every ride with minimal waits. What impressed me most is that people were following the rules really, really well. I’m not saying everyone was perfect all the time, but it was really good. Espe

There was also live entertainment at the American Pavilion. Hopefully they keep the entertainers there when it all settles down.

I didn’t get my room until 5 pm, so I stayed. I got dinner in Japan, the chicken teriyaki, which was good. I visited the DVC lounge, which was cool. I also walked over 12 miles
With all that said, it was a very surreal experience. I was so happy to be back, but it’s not the same. Arguably, the people are the heart of Epcot and that was lacking. For me, it was still incredible, just different.

July 19 - Part 3: The Room

I am speechless you guys. I paid in points for a studio, but they gave me a 1 Bedroom. This thing is huge! It’s made for an entire family, but I get it all to myself! They really didn’t have to do this, but I am so thankful that they did. I don’t know what I’m going to do with a full kitchen, but I feel like I should attempt to cook something.

July 20 - DHS: Part 1

512010

I wasn't quite able to make it to rope drop. Getting into the parking lot and the check-in process was a breeze. By the time I got in at 10:15 am, the boarding groups were all gone.

512011

DHS did feel more crowded than Epcot, but I'm not sure if there were actually more people. Epcot is sprawling while DHS is a postage stamp park, so it's really hard to say. People were wearing their masks and distancing, so that was good. For whatever reason, it felt hotter than when I was in Epcot.

I went on a few rides and then went to lunch at 50's Prime Time. I had the fried chicken, a cherry coke and the brownie for desert. The chicken was pretty good, not the best in the world, but still good comfort food. The brownie was also good too. I think they did a good job doing table service, with the exception of them not supporting Apple Pay yet.

512015

After lunch, I went on Tower of Terror and tried to get a 1 pm Boarding Group. I failed even though I was on at 1 pm. Ah well. After ToT I decided it was time to go back to the resort for a nap.

The first half of the day was pretty good. Hopefully I can get a 4 pm boarding group.

July 19 - DHS: Part 2

512107

After my nap I got back to the park to try to get a boarding pass. I got in a few minutes before 4 pm just as the Mickey and Mickie Camaros started rolling. It was pretty cool.

512108

As the clock struck 4, I got into a boarding group. I was pretty excited. I then went on Mickie and Minnie's Runaway Railway for the first time. I had avoided all the spoilers, so it was a nice surprise. It's really cute and I loved it. It's probably my favorite family ride.

512110

I got to ride a bunch more rides and see a lot of things. It was still pretty hot, but as the hours passed people started heading for the exits. I started noting that my boarding group was stuck at 90 minutes to go and the ride had been down for quite some time. Eventually, they sent me notification that my boarding group had been cancelled, so that was a bit of a bummer.

512111

While in a line, I decided to get an extra Epcot park pass for Sunday. I have an AP, so it wouldn't necessarily make it any more expensive to do an extra day at Epcot (assuming I find a good deal on a room somewhere) than going to Six Flags Over Georgia. After seeing how good of a job Disney is doing, I'm a bit worried about going to a Six Flags in Georgia after my experience in Dollywood. It would just mean two days of driving instead of giving myself a break. I'm still not sure yet on what I want to do.

I went on a bunch of other stuff and had a pretty good day. I rode Mickey and Minnie's one more time and decided to walk through Galaxy's Edge on my way to my last ride of the night. I asked about the status of boarding groups because I was curious where they ended up and they asked me for my number, I told them and they let me in! I ended up being the only one on the ride, so it was a really amazing experience.

All in all, it was a really excellent day!

When I got back, I went to the resort store to buy some orange juice. They're out and they don't know when they're getting any back. Apparently their shipments are all screwed up, kinda weird yet understandable.

Tomorrow I go to Magic Kingdom!

I drive my car as much as you! 2017 with 92k miles - whoops! You prepared for the drive very well! Also, I deep clean before I go away too. Are we twins? I usually bring my 2 cats and dog back toys though as an apology.

I am enjoying your TR so far! The OKW 1 bedroom is MASSIVE. What an upgrade - on points too!

Thank you for your awesome reports! Love your room upgrade at OKW, how nice and so unheard of to get an upgrade like that on points, that's some serious Disney magic! Enjoy the rest of your trip, we're enjoying your updates!

We have stayed at OKW 3 times and all three times we were upgraded oddly enough...strange. one time it was supposed to be a studio for wife and I and they put us in a 2 bedroom, so we wound up calling our son and his girlfriend to come over from UCF...was a great surprise as those villas are huge. Enjoy the space!!
