What are your personal reasons/motivations for losing weight? Include some fun ones too. Here are mine:

1. I want to be at a lower, more healthy weight.
2. Feel better about myself and appearance in general.
3. More energy to keep up with my kids.
4. Buy clothing in "normal-sized" stores.
5. Fit into some older/smaller things I've kept in my closet.
6. Get under those dreaded 50lb weights on the Doctor's office scale...you know...100lb, then CLUNK for the 150lb + weight. Then, the dreaded...CLUNK for the 200lb + weight. I can't wait to be under 200lbs and I'll be absolutely thrilled to get under the 150lb weight!!--NO CLUNKS!
7. I want to get the "100 lb" WISH clippie.
8. I want to weigh less than my DH.
9. I want to show my thinner sister (you know the one--whose always really "enjoyed" being thinner than you?!) that she's not the only one who can be thin.
10. I DO NOT want to be the biggest mom in my kids' class.

What are some of yours??
Margaret:D

I want to step aboard the Magic 14wks from today at goal weight

1. To be healthier
2. Have more energy
3. I want to be in good shape and at a healthy weight before I think of having another baby.
4. I don't want to hate the thought of having to dress up because I don't like the way I look and because I hate the sizes I have to buy.
5. I'm in my brother's wedding next October and don't want to be the fattest one in the wedding party!
6. Like Margaret, I don't want to be the biggest mom in my daughter's class!
7. To feel better about myselft, more confident
8. So I don't have to buy the size X-large anymore
9. I want to be able to walk into the Gap and not feel out of place with all those skinny minnies in there! ;) :D
10. Because I want to be a size 10 again

1) I like the confidence that goes along with being slim.

2) I want to stay attractive to that 'special someone'.

3) Right now, it gives me a measure of control over a situation that feels very much out of my control. It reminds me that I DO have areas of my life that I can have a direct and positive influence upon.

1. To fit back into my favorite clothes.

2. To have more energy.

3. To feel that my body is strong and capable, not run-down and dumpy.

4. To walk into a room and feel confident, because I'll know I'm healthy and beautiful.

5. To reach a goal I've set for myself, just because I want to, not because I feel like someone else wants me to.

Daisy;)

1. To be healthy

2. To be more confident

3. To have a Victoria Secret's Christmas

4. To start wearing tailored clothes again

5. My DD graduates from hs in 2005...I don't want to be the fat one at graduation

6. Likewise when DS graduates from Marine boot I don't want to be the fat one

7. I want DH to be able to sweep me off my feet!

8. Our 25th class reunion is next summer and I want DH to be proud (ME TOO) of how I look (I was sooooo thin in HS)

9. I want to start hiking in the mountains and be able to keep up with my step Mom on our Rocky mountain hikes

10. I JUST WANT TO FEEL GOOD AGAIN, PERIOD!!!

1. Health
2. Self Esteem
3. Energy

Everything else falls under those categories!!!

1. To wear clothes comfortably
2. To not be the fat one in my family (bros & sisters)
3. To wear fashionable clothes
4. More energy
5. To feel sexy again
6. To not have a big pouchy belly

1) To be more energetic for my girls, get involved in more family outings that includes physical exercise (good for the girls too!)
2) To be comfortable in a bathing suit, especially on our 10th Anniversary cruise
3) To be able to walk into a store and buy an outfit without having to see how fat I look in it first!
4) To keep my marriage healthy, more energetic and fun!
5) I used to get whistled at all the time, I have only been whistled at once since I had my girls...I want construction guys to whistle again (is that not the dumbest thing ever?) It is all about self esteem I guess!
Probably a million other reasons....but, like Beastlover said, it all comes down to self esteem, health and energy!

Maybe we should print out our reasons and post them somewhere in our home (on our fridges, for example!) I have been meaning to put inspirational phrase all over too...think I might just do that today (as opposed to laundry, cleaning the bathrooms, etc.....bad me!)

For me, going on the Atkins diet and re-joining CURVES was not really about losing weight, although that was/is a very nice side benefit and a great motivator NOT to cheat. I'm thankful that nativetxn posted about her DH because that's what got me started on researching Atkins for diabetics!

My reasons for beginning and continuing the the diet and exercise program:

1. To get my diabetes/blood sugar levels under control (working very well, so far. My last AIC test would be considered normal for a non-diabetic).

2. To improve my cholesterol numbers, especially the HDL level (working, but more slowly than blood sugar control). I now believe that the low fat/higher carb diet my doctor recommended in combination with the 2 prescription drugs for cholesterol actually caused my HDL to plummet. My total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were all within normal limits, albeit not by much, before the drugs/low fat diet. The Dr said they need to treat diabetics aggressively for cholesterol because of the increased risk of heart disease. However my HDL was actually better before the low fat diet and drugs than it was afterwards. Very frustrating, since all the Dr wanted to do was add more drugs. Dr couldn't seem to explain results. Gave me the impression that he thought I wasn't following the recommended diet. Not true! Of course, I'm not following it now, LOL! Since Atkins my HDL is starting to rise again and that's good - gives me hope of eliminating the last cholesterol med sometime in the future. I'd much rather use nutrition methods than drugs, especially if the expensive drugs aren't working! Who wouldn't?

Side benefits:

1. Lost just under 20 pounds since 4/27 and for the first time in 23 years, my BMI is under 25.

2. Clothes fit and look better. Have lost nearly 3 dress/pant sizes.

3. Much more energy.

4. Eczema (on my eyes, neck, inside elbows, and hands) has nearly completely disappeared. This is a HUGE plus for me.

5. Compliments from friends and family.

6. Elimination of need for two prescription drugs that I had been taking daily. Hoping to eliminate one more and reduce the dosage on the remaining one.

7. Stable blood sugar levels. No more swings up and down. That means I no longer have to eat on a schedule. My DH says I am not so moody anymore, either.

8. Lost my desire for sugary things and refined carbs (like bread, pasta, crackers, donuts, etc.). Am seldom hungry and when I am, I can eat until I feel full without guilt!

Definitely not a benefit:

1. Having to endure remarks that Atkins/restricted carb diets are not healthy from those who don't know my situation.

2. Eating at other people's homes. They feel bad if I don't eat everything they prepare and skip dessert.

3. Grocery shopping for "normal" foods for DH and daughter who still consume milk, bread, pasta, chips, regular soda and crackers. Kind of makes me feel guilty when I buy those things AND when I don't, LOL!

If you are still reading, THANKS!

Great thread!

1) To get healthier. A couple of family members have had health problems over the last year that are directly related to being overweight. That made me wake up and see that I was headed in the same direction.

2) To have more energy. I was tired of being tired all the time.

3) To go on vacation or family outings and be able to keep up. I don't want to be the one that has to sit down and rest anymore.

4) I was tired of the hold that food had on me. I want to be the one in control!

5) To be able to buy fashionable clothes instead of things that just cover up my fat!

6) I was tired of seeing pictures of myself where I looked like a small mountain with a head perched atop it! (Not that I allowed too many pictures of me to be taken)

7) I want DD to be proud of her mom at her graduation in 2005.

8) I want DH to look at me with a new light in his eyes.

9) I want to be able to feel good about wearing a bathing suit.

10) Now that I have lost 20 lbs, I am beginning to get compliments from friends and family. That's pretty neat!! I think I could get to like that!

Good topic!!

1. I wanted to open the closet door and not have my clothes scream, "AAAAGGGHHH, he's back and he's going to try to squeeze into us!":p

2. We had kids later than many, and I want to live to see their graduations, weddings, and grandchildren!

3. I didn't want my kids to be embarrassed of his fat dad or get teased about my weight.

4. I wanted to be able to buy clothes and not be embarrased by the size I had to buy when I went to pay for them. And DAMN (am I allowed to say that here) it felt good this week at Nordstrom when I asked the clerk to fetch me size 34's when the 36's were too big!

5. I want to not feel bad about seeing myself in pictures.

6. I want to go to Disney World at my optimal weight.

7. I want to not feel self concious about taking my shirt off at the beach! (O.K. all you Cape Codders, look for me at First Encounter or Nauset Light Beach the week of August 16th!)

8. My cholesterol was borderline too high.

9. I don't want my kids to grow up with a weight problem like I did so I'm setting a good example (hopefully!)

10. My wife likes me better this way!!

1. I want to show my children the importance of eating right and exercise.

2. I want to look in the mirror and see tailored clothing- not stretchy knit.

3. I want my husband to have that look of "WOW- she's MY wife!" when I walk into a room.

4. I want to pay less on my life insurance policy.

5. I want to wear my wedding dress again before I'm 40 (4 years away!) size 8!

6. I want to walk in a marathon with all these losers!!

7. I want our family of five to be able to fit into a booth at a restaurant as long as we can- as the kids get bigger- the parents get smaller! It saves on having to wait for the "big" tables!

8. I want to be able to slip a water bottle between me and the armrest in an airplane and not feel it denting my thigh!

9. I want to be able to do a front walkover or maybe even learn how to do a tuck for when I finish the marathon!!

10. I want to WATER SKI AGAIN!!!
Tara

1. I want to be healthier overall. I know way too many people who've had heart attacks (most of them died), have/had cancer, or some other problem, and almost all of them are/were overweight.

2. I want to be able to wear clothes I admire! Sometimes I'll look at an outfit on a mannequin and say, "if I were thinner, I'd wear that."

3. I'd like to improve my energy level.

4. I also want to improve my appearance in general.

5. I'm tired of people talking about how I looked 10 years ago (I was "average" then) in comparison to now.

6. I'd like to help other people lose weight. It's a lot easier to help someone else when they see how much you've lost.

These are in no particular order, just as I think of them!

1. So I can actually wear some of that cute suff in Victoria's Secret.

2. So I can see a single digit number on all the tags of my clothing.

3. So I can fit comfortably in to those teeny tiny seats at the Rose Bowl

4. So I can have one less excuse to not date anyone (don't worry I have tons more)

5. So I can buy all new clothes

6. So I never have to hide in the back of a group picture ever again

7. So I can weigh less than my mother again.

8. So I can do in to a dressing room, strip down under those bright, unforgiving lights and not have a nervous breakdown.

9. So I can sit in the middle seat in the back of a car and not make all three of us uncomfortable.

10. My 10 year high school reunion is in 2 years.

  1. To not die today.
  2. To live long enough to retire and work at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom.
  3. To be able to walk everywhere that I want to without resting.
  4. To not hold my DISer friends up at DIS meets at WDW from being so slow.
  5. To exercise everyday without pain.
  6. To be able to shop for clothes in a normal store.
  7. To learn how to live a healthy lifestyle.
  8. To be able to run even if I use a cane.
    [/list=1]

    We can do it.

God bless, best wishes, and encouragement, RaySharpton:)
