So we were thinking of spending a month in Florida next winter, and had the crazy idea of camping at Fort Wilderness the whole time !

Did anybody out there ever did that ? If so, tell me about your experience.

Should we do it, park there then move around with the car ?
Or hop around from campgrounds to campgrounds :confused3

Let me know what you think, some people around here really think i am nuts:lmao:

We spent Nov 2002 to March 2003 at the Fort.

We spent Oct 2003 to Feb 2004 at the Fort.

Haven't done it.... yet. Our longest stay so far is the 3 weeks we spend our annual vacation at the Fort, but the "long range plan" is to shoot for Oct-Feb/Mar.

When the time comes we want to be able to stay at the Fort, but that'll involve some creative financial planning given the rates these days.

If DH has his way it'll be sooner than later. ;)

We have stayed for several months during the fall/winter season for the last 2 years. In 2008/2009 we had reservations for 5 months but after 2 1/2 months we decided we were ready to hit the road. Sitting in one place for that long was just not for us. In 2009/2010, we stayed for 2 months and realized that was the perfect amount of time for us. We don't like to be there during the peak weeks of Christmas/New Years; it's just too crowded for our tastes. So for 2010/2011 we are going down for a month after Thanksgiving, leaving before the Christmas rush and heading along the gulf coast for several weeks. After New Years, we are going back to the Fort for acouple of months and then hit the road again.

Yes some people think we are nuts too but hey, it's my life not theirs. We've learned to do anything/everything that we always talked about doing after we retired. Just gotta keep checking those items off the "bucket list", ya know.

Thank you everyone for the info...wow ! now i cant wait to spend 2 months at Fort Wlderness....2 months:banana:

Our longest stay has been 9 days a year ago in May during the two week period where it rained 90% of our stay. Our typical stays are 4 to 5 days 4 times a year. Our next stay is the end of this month, but with the heat I'm thinking of canceling. It just isn't that much fun being home in the heat. I don't really want to pay extra for the experience. After that my next trip is Thanksgiving for a week. Can't wait. We have never been away for Thanksgiving and it will be great weather. My first year not cooking a meal. Already have ressies at Liberty Tree.

We'll be there over Thanksgiving too - plus the week before and after :yay:. We've only been @ WDW on Thanksgiving once before (MK was wall-to-wall people!!), but we've traveled down over the holiday and arrived that weekend a bunch of time. One year I cooked a turkey dinner ahead of time and we ate it in a WalMart parking lot in VA. Good times!

No cooking for me! I have family in Plant City (45 mins?) that have already invited us down for the day. Worst case I was pretty sure we could find turkey legs somewhere! :thumbsup2

Affirmative on the 45 minutes to Plant City. Not a bad drive, but it will be busy on I-4 on Thanksgiving Day.

It was about $50,000

But, that's just pocket change for you!

Wow, at $50K that equates to over $200 a day. (8 months x 30 days = 240 days. $50k/240 days = $208/night)

What campsite were you staying at that cost that much? Or did some of that $50K include some visits to Crocketts Tavern?:lmao::lmao:

He probably had to pay for wrecking a couple of golf carts.

WOW!

Do they wait and bill you when you leave or do you pay weekly? monthly?

For our extended stays, the maximum reservation is for 30 days. We pay for the first 30 days upon checkin and at the end of the month we pay for any additional charges we have on the bill. For the next 30 days, we just repeat the process and checkin again.

:rotfl::rotfl: Oh that's right, I forgot about the golf carts. I remember he said he takes them out and runs the crap out of them. Then turns it back in and gets another one.

Here’s the break down
1. 25K Camp sites and cabins
2. 5K Bail
3. 5K Golf carts with damage
4. 2K Golf carts no damage
5. 2K Food
6. 10K Beer
7. 3K Misc.
