What's your favorite overlooked park "thing/object"?

Hopefully this will make sense, do you have a favorite something located in either Disneyland or California Adventure? Specifically a certain something, object, decoration, etc. that most people would overlook or just glance at and not pay too much attention to. I guess even a sound would qualify, say if you like hearing the Steamboat whistle blow or the arrival announcement for the Steam engine train.

I really dig watching the Evil Queen peer out the window above the Snow White ride.

Great question. Like most people, I have lots of these things. I love looking at how the balconies of the New Orleans Square are themed.

Fun topic!

There are so many, but I will have to go with something that I think most people usually just walk right by and I take a moment to look at often. There is a mezuzah on the doorpost of one of the faux store fronts on Main Street. It has some fun history and considering there are no Channukah decorations during December, this is a fascinating decorative element in the Park.

P.S. In case someone is about to ask, a mezuzah is a case containing a scroll that is attached to the door frame of many Jewish households.

Nobody pays attention to these but me.

OT: Grim Grinning Girl: I was looking at the page in your sig and thought it was "I make n eat stuff" instead of "I make neat stuff". LOL!

Hmmmmm....that IS a fun topic and a hard question to boot. I like what Disney Dreams said - I am not Jewish, but I know my Jewish friends would appreciate getting some recognition in DLR in terms of decor. They have said as much.

This is not something that is overlooked, by any means, and perhaps is a very unoriginal choice, but I really like the quest for Hidden Mickeys. I like stumbling upon them accidentally. I like searching really hard for one and finding it. I like the different shapes and sizes they come in, some being very abstract and hard to distinguish.

Oh, and these may be overlooked by people who are not obsessively into Disney as I am (like my friends who just sort of love Disney), but I love the animated window displays on Main Street - I think that gives a real charm to that area of DL - and I love the 'edible' plants (fruits, herbs, vegetables) in Tomorrowland. Those are easily overlooked by folks who think they are just regular plants. I also really enjoy the Christmas ornament shop tucked away in New Orleans Square, which is easily overlooked. It is nice to have a little dose of the holidays year round.

Those are my 'things,' I guess. The things I like to look for and that some folks may miss out on seeing. But really, the parks are chock full of little tucked away gems like that.

There's a lot for me.

I love the little lights in the tress at night that look like flickering fireflies.

I love the sound of crickets that they pipe in during the evening too.

I love the narrow streets and building facades of New Orleans square.

I love the pretty Spanish walkway that goes by the entry to Rancho del Zocalo (the walkway goes from Frontierland to Fantasyland).

I love the HUGE bougainvillea at Rancho del Zocal. It's so pretty!

I could probably think of many more.:goodvibes

You know what is another nice little touch that I bet many visitors to DLR miss? I even missed it myself for years. DLR is so thorough with its theming of each land that sometimes there are little subtle touches that we take for granted and step on, literally. My friend pointed out to me (2 weeks ago) the little horseshoe prints and hoof prints in the ground all over Frontierland. It is obviously a very deliberate effect to enhance the theme of that land, but one that is easily ignored, I would imagine, by people who don't LOVE DLR as we all do here on the DIS!!

And prior to spending so much time here on DISboards, I had never come to notice the vast number of weather vanes throughout DLR - and the variety of them to be discovered! What a treat!

So sometimes, you have to look way above you or way below you to find the special little DLR details that enhance the overall experience!

Like someone else said, I like the balconies in NOS. Also, something that's not technically overlooked (because it can't be), but underappreciated imo, are the sounds coming from buildings (ex. the piano teacher and dentist on Main Street and the voodoo priestess in NOS). Whenever I hear one of those spiels starting to go on, I'll stand/sit there and listen until they're done.

I think those building sounds are often tuned out, so to speak. You know how when you are in a place such as DLR where all your senses are actively engaged because there is so much going on all around you, you may be a little more in tune with the sights and the smells but not the sounds? And then on another trip, it could be that you hear all the sounds but don't see as many of the little hidden gems. There are lots of ambient sounds piped in here and there around the parks, and I bet many of them go unrecognized. I know that some folks have not yet heard the 'bug sounds' coming from behind certain bushes and plants in A Bug's Land, and we only noticed them in October for the first time, when one of the sounds startled my friend who was standing in front of one of the bushes!

Happy to see that I'm not the only person who's noticed the mezuzah!

And that I'm not the only one who's noticed the horseshoe prints in Frontierland- I just noticed those on my last trip!

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Penny the Elephant! There's just something about seeing a see-through baby elephant whlst being surrounded by the yummy smell of the candy shop/ice cream parlor on Main Street.

These cool Western "chandeliers" in Frontierland- I would LOVE to have one of these in my house. Or, at least a lamp like them :upsidedow

Sosai X, seriously I have never ever noticed those. I’m a crazy person when it comes to looking at CM name tags. Every CM we come encounter with I look at their name tags to see their names and locations. Just out of curiosity, I guess. I do see some CMs who location is from Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc. DBF usually will strike up a convo with them in Spanish. Interesting, I guess I’m not paying enough attention as I thought I was!

At Disneyland I think my favorite thing would probably be Snow White’s grotto. Every time we go over there, there are hardly any people in that area. I really just love sitting there and listening to Snow White sing out of the wishing well. There’s also a CM entrance/exit door and characters usually come out or leave from there.

I hear (ha!) that there are similar things in Animal Kingdom at WDW. I can't wait until we can get out there, so I can listen. :)

I can't think of things for this thread! I agree with the bougainvi...big pink flowers...at Rancho, I have so many pictures of them. :)

And I am very specifically a fan of the Ratatouille window on Main St. There are so many little pixar-specific touches, like Lasseter wine, when you stand there for 10 minutes and use your camera's zoom. :)

Our place, as we called it this week on our trip was the Plaza Gardens Pavilion. We had never really noticed it before, but on our first day we took some snacks and drinks and sat down and realized that there was no one there haha. So we used it as our getaway from the crazy crowds, and we ate there every day of our trip.

Oops, I've never noticed that before and that's exactly what it looks like! I guess in a way it's true, I do make and eat stuff popcorn:: . I just don't eat the stuff that I make :crazy2: .

All these examples make me realize how much stuff I overlook, and I've been going to Disneyland since forever. My friend's 5 year old pointed out the hoof prints in Frontierland on our last trip, and I couldn't remember if I had noticed them before or not?

I agree and think hidden Mickeys are a great example, and they serve as a pleasing reward for those who take time out to pay attention to detail and scenery. And I had no clue that there are sound effects coming from the buildings on Main Street.

I think this is why Disney theme parks are superior to all the rest, every element is taken into consideration. No inch is left ignored, they go all out to make you believe that you have entered a different world which I feel they have successfully accomplished. Now if only their prices could reflect those of the Old West or the Turn of the Century, then their imagineering magic would be pure perfection :rotfl: .

I like the little sign on the lamp post by the corner of the Mad Hatter and Mr. Toad that points the direction for each attraction.

Along the same lines I am a big fan of the Mr. Toad statue right inside the queue. I have taken my picture with the statue at least once on every trip that I have taken to DL.

I also love the detailing of Jingles (the lead horse on the King Arthur Carousel) with the Mary Poppins inspired crest.

Finally I love the torches on the Adventureland sign at night. It truly makes it feel exotic to me.

I love the Ratatouille window! It amuses me a lot and I like watching Linguini go!

The things I always like looking at:

  • The little yellow birds at the South Seas Trader. I always stop by to say hi to them. :wave2:
  • The Tic-Tock weathervane on top of Peter Pan's Flight. I love Tic-Tock!
  • The pizza toppings on the aliens' Saturns in the Astro Blasters queue.
  • The kid's "Adidas" on the DL Bank mural by the bathrooms.
  • The dung from "The Dung & I" at It's Tough to be a Bug.
  • The panda in the Christmas Fantasy Parade. I love pandas!
  • The MS Cone Shop window. When it's open, I flip out bc it's hardly ever open & I think that's pretty overlooked.
  • The retro Disney games in TSMM.
  • The maseca dog, Jimmy, & Umberto at Mission Tortilla Factory. They're not really overlooked, but I think they're hilarious.

I'm sure that there's more, but since I'm not at DLR, I don't remember.

It may not be a little thing, but I like collectively how every CM's costume for every land is unique to that land; it really puts me in the atmosphere Walt was trying to convey!
