What's your favorite hymn? (inspired by C. Ann)

Lily of the Valley
Amazing Grace
How Great Thou Art
I'll Fly Away
Victory in Jesus
and my favorite:

He's Everything To Me

In the stars His handiwork I see,
On the wind He speaks with majesty.
Though He ruleth over land and sea,
What is that to me?
I will celebrate Nativity,
For it has a place in history,
Sure, He came to set His people free,
What is that to me?

Til by faith I met Him face to face,
And I felt the wonder of His grace,
Then I knew that He was more
Than just a God who didn't care,
That lived away out there
and .....
Now He walks beside me day by day,
Ever watching o'er me lest I stray,
Helping me to find that narrow way,
He is everything to me.
(repeat 3 times)

You can listen to the tune here:http://my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis/songbook/everything.html

And a song I want played at my funeral:

Goodbye World, Goodbye

I've told all my troubles goodbye,
Goodbye to each tear and each sigh.
This world where I roam cannot be my home,
I'm bound for that home in the sky.
I walk and I talk with my Lord,
I feast every day on His word,
Heaven is near and I can't stay here
Goodbye world, goodbye.
I won't have the blues anymore
When I step across to that shore.
And I'll never pine for I'll leave behind
My heartaches and cares ever more.
A day maybe two then goodbye,
Goodbye to each sorrow and sigh.
Heaven is near and I can't stay here,
Goodbye world, goodbye.

Now don't you weep for me when I'm gone
For I won't have to leave here alone.
And when I hear that last trumpet sound
My feet won't stay on the ground.
I'm gonna rise with a shout, gonna fly,
Gonna rise with my Lord in the sky.
Heaven is near and I can't stay here,
Goodbye world, goodbye.

But beware, it is quite "jazzy" for a funeral song!:teeth:

I Vow to thee, My Country

hands down it's amazing grace
but also love let there be peace on earth

Wow, so many that were listed here. It's too hard to pick just one.

"A Mighty Fortress is our God" has traditionally been my favorite hymn, but I love most of the Easter hymns, like "Christ the Lord has Risen Today" and "Because He Lives". Like other posters have mentioned, our church sings mostly contemporary music.... I kind of miss the old, traditional hymns during the holidays................P

Great question! Mine are "Great is Thy Faithfulness" and "Wonderful Grace of Jesus". :D

That is my mom's absolute favorite hymn. She's asked me to somehow incorporate it into her funeral service when she dies,
(which I hope won't be for a long time yet :D )

Mine would have to be:

Ave Maria (the Bach-Gounod version, not the Schubert)
How Great Thou Art
Holy God We Praise Thy Name
Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above
O Come All Ye Faithful (I know it's a Christmas Carol, but musically especially when it's done SATB, it's as good as it gets.)

I also have to add a brand new favorite. The hymn which was sung by the US Armed Forces Chorus as the recessional at Pres. Reagan's funeral. Thanks to some knowledgeable DISers, I was able to find out that is is called "The Mansions of the Lord." It is a phenomonal piece of music.

Holy, Holy, Holy

Here I Am

Lord of the Dance

Another vote for Amazing Grace here. I'm another one that can't hear it without wanting to cry.

One more for my list

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. (which also has a more fancy name too & possibly different words but the tune is the same I know.)

Ave Maria is my favorite...it brings me to tears everyime I hear it. It was just played at My DH's Aunt's funeral this past saturday.

My next favorite is Prayer of St. Francis.

My next would be On Angels Wings...but it brings back such sad memories, it is so hard to listen to it. the first time I heard it was at my FIL's funeral and he was such a wonderful man.

Holy, Holy, Holy consistently gives me chills.

How Great Thou Art
Great is thy Faithfulness
It Is Well (with my soul)

Are all top faves. =)

Softly and Tenderly
Just as I am
Shall we gather at the river

My favorite is How Great Thou Art. Of course, this is very much played at funerals and makes me cry everytime I hear it. My dad tells me that it's such a wonderful song, and it shouldn't make us sad. DH wants it played at his funeral (in a long, long, long time). I think that is why it affects me so much.

Here I am Lord
Prayer of St. Francis
Order my steps in your word
We are many parts

Here I am Lord
The Old Rugged Cross
Just a Closer Walk With Thee
It is Well With My Soul

Well, now I sit here with my hankie out. So many wonderful hymns, and so many that my mom loved and we sang at her funeral. All time family favorite...Lift High the Cross.
Then there is 'I Will Dwell...', I'm singing that one this Sunday.
How Great Tho Art
On Eagles WIngs
Prayer of ST. Francis
8-fold Alleluia

And one that I can never seem to find, that was sung at mom's funeral and she had requested.."When all is said and done".

There are a lot of these that I have to sing alto for, since I have to work at that part. If I sing soprano, I just cry thu the whole darn thing!!

Ha! I play the organ for my Church every Sunday - and I'm struggling to recall my "favorite" hymns!

But I know I really like:

Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us
Near to the Heart of God
Banner of the Cross (fun to sing in parts)
Eternal Father, Strong to Save
Man of Sorrows
Precious Lord, Take my Hand

plus that beautiful song that the string quartet (?) played as the Titanic was sinking and people were in a panic. I can never remember the name of it, but it's in our hymnal... That's a great one, too.
